Job summary

UPMC Hamot is seeking detail-oriented Central Sterile Processing candidates to join our team. In this role you will perform decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging and sterilization of reusable surgical instruments to support safe patient care.

Full-time, 2nd shift (2:30 PM – 11:00 PM) with weekend and holiday rotations after training. Eligible candidates may qualify for a $2,500 sign-on bonus, and certified CP techs may qualify for up to $5,000.

Qualifications

  • Prior Central Sterile processing experience is highly preferred.
  • Prior healthcare experience is highly preferred.
  • Individuals who enjoy hands-on work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Candidates who are comfortable being on their feet for extended periods and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality and patient safety.

Responsibilities

  • Perform decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization and storage of instruments.
  • Document sterilization processes and maintain accurate records.
  • Monitor sterilizers and maintain inventory.
  • Collaborate with operating rooms to support patient safety and care.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety policies.

Job description

UPMC Hamot is seeking detail-oriented, experienced Central Sterile Processing candidates to join our team!

In this role, you will perform the decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, distribution, and documentation of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment in accordance with established procedures. UPMC Hamot’s Central Sterile Processing team plays a vital role in supporting safe, high-quality surgical care and achieving the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Eligible candidates may qualify for a $2,500 sign-on bonus. Certified Central Sterile Processing professionals may be eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus.

Schedule:

Full-time, 2nd shift (2:30 PM – 11:00 PM). Weekend and holiday rotations are required upon completion of training. Training may be completed on dayshift.

The Central Processing Department (CPD) is responsible for cleaning, sterilizing, and preparing the instrumentation and equipment used throughout our operating rooms and procedural areas. This is an active, team-oriented role that is essential to supporting surgical services and patient care.

Overview:

To be trained to perform duties necessary for the proper decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, distribution, and documentation of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment according to established procedures. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Responsibilities:

  • Communication: Practices strong verbal and written skills. Articulates and translates information to care providers. Negotiates and recommends unit practice changes. Ensures comprehensive documentation.

  • Patient Experience: Builds healing relationships. Disseminates new knowledge through presentations, posters, and publications.
  • Relationships: Develops and maintains productive relationships. Mentors and models positive communication. Addresses workplace issues like horizontal violence and impairment.
  • Professional Development: Mentors and educates others. Shares expertise within and beyond the clinical unit. Participates in change initiatives.
  • Leadership: Invests in building healthy relationships. Sets priorities and leads by example.
  • Compliance: Adheres to policies on decontamination, sterile processing, infection control, and safety.
  • Equipment Handling: Cleans, decontaminates, assembles, and troubleshoots equipment. Monitors sterilizers and maintains inventory.
  • Teamwork: Communicates effectively. Participates in performance improvement activities. Demonstrates accountability and commitment to core values.
  • Additional Duties: Performs related duties as assigned. Adheres to system-wide competencies and behaviors.
  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent with no experience -or- Currently enrolled in an Accredited Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing Program Preferred -or-1 year of experience within UPMC
  • All staff must complete 10 hours of continuing education to remain qualified as a Central Sterile Technician on an annual basis.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution OR Certified Registered Central Service Technician OR International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management required for our PA and NY facilities (MD facilities are excluded). New employees in our PA and NY facilities (MD is excluded) will have 18 months from date of hire to obtain required certification.
  • Act 34
  • Employees active in a Central Sterile position, on or before the effective date 12/27/2020, at a healthcare facility, are grandfathered regarding certification and will not need to obtain it unless they move into a different position that would require certification

Job title and salary will be determined based on qualifications and career ladder placement.
