Job summary

Gerdau is seeking a Central Maintenance Mechanic to support heavy industrial maintenance across our Virginia operations. The role covers mechanical and electrical maintenance on diesel and heavy equipment, with a focus on safety, quality, and reliability.

You will work on 12‑hour rotating shifts in a robust manufacturing setting, using blueprints and drawings to install, repair and optimize plant machinery while adhering to NFPA 70E standards and continuous improvement goals.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of heavy industrial mechanical or electrical maintenance with diesel or heavy equipment.
• Experience in an industrial maintenance role with routine tasks.
• Ability to work at heights up to 150 ft.
• Rotate 12‑hour shifts, including days, nights and two weekends per month (Dupont 4/3).
• Proficient in shop math, drawings, specifications, charts and precision instruments.
• Experience with AC/DC motors, gearboxes, lubrication, welding, NFPA 70E, and basic tools.
• Experience with pumps, hydraulics, pneumatics, stick/TIG welding, and rigging.
• Ability to read schematics/blueprints and work in a self-directed team.

Responsibilities

• Install, adjust, repair, and perform maintenance using drawings, wiring diagrams and manuals.
• Position, fit, and weld components to assemble machinery frames per blueprints.
• Troubleshoot pumps, gear boxes, motors, cranes and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.
• Inspect machines for preventative maintenance and care for shop equipment.
• Tear down, replace, repair, install, and assemble parts and accessories.
• Cut, bend and thread conduit, pipe and tubing as required.
• Maintain records of work performed, repairs and material usage.

Your Qualifications:

• 3 to 5 years of heavy industrial mechanical OR electrical maintenance experience with d iesel or heavy equipment or mobile equipment experience.
• Experience working in an industrial environment in a position containing a routine maintenance component
• Ability to work in heights up to 150 ft.
• Ability to work a rotating 12 hr shift, days, nights, and two weekends a month (Dupont 4/3 schedule)
• Understanding of shop mathematics with the use of drawings, specifications, charts, tables, and precision measuring instruments
• Experience withAC/DC motors, gear box mechanics, lubrication principles, welding, cutting torch, NFPA 70E, and common maintenance hand tools
• Experience with pumps, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, stick and tig welding and rigging principles
• Knowledge of interpreting schematics and blueprints
• Ability and willingness to work as part of a self-directed team with limited supervision

Your Work:

• Use drawings, sketches, wiring diagrams, machine operation and maintenance manuals, work order requests, and oral instructions to install, adjust, repair, and perform assigned maintenance duties.
• Position, fit and weld components to assemble machinery frames, plant equipment, attachments or accessories, and building parts according to blueprints or knowledge of structure and metal characteristics utilizing various specialty cutting and welding equipment.
• Troubleshoot and service pumps, gear boxes, motors, cranes, and hydraulic, and pneumatic systems as needed at an intermediate level.
• Periodically inspect conditions of plant operating machines and equipment for preventative maintenance purposes. Inspect and perform routine equipment care on all shop machinery, mobile equipment, and cranes.
• Tear down, replace, repair, install, and assemble simple equipment parts, components, and accessories.
• Cut, bend, and thread conduit, pipe, and tubing.
• Maintain specified records of work performed, details of repairs, and material usage.
