Job Summary: Auburn University’s Office of the Sr. Vice President of Research and Economic Development is accepting applications for the position of Central Accountant I, II, III. This position is responsible for journal entries, reporting, analysis, and audit/reconciliation of accounts for Contracts & Grants Accounting.

Essential Functions:

  • Creates and maintains accounts through documentation, compilation, reconciliation, and analysis of financial information and preparation of journal entries.
  • Reviews transactions for conformity with procedures or limits, and closes out accounts for expired contracts.
  • Performs financial analysis such as expense summary, forecasting, depreciation or investment performance, and prepares reports for internal use and/or external agencies (e.g., sponsors, government).
  • Communicates with internal departments and/or sponsoring agencies to ensure compliance with policies, contracts, grants, laws, regulations, or procedures.
  • Conducts audits to substantiate individual transactions and works with external and internal auditors on annual audits.
  • Collects appropriate data and prepares tax returns and/or other standard federal forms.
  • Recommends and implements improvements to accounting practices, systems, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a Degree plus a CPA

Experience:

  • Level I: 0 years of Experience in accounting services
  • Level II: 2 years of Experience in accounting services
  • Level III: 4 years of Experience in accounting services

Substitution allowed for Experience: When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications:

  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization to the completion of difficult assignments.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Broad knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

Minimum License and Certifications: None Required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in Higher Education.
  • Contracts and Grants accounting experience.
  • Working knowledge of Auburn University policies and procedures.

Salary Range: $47,620 - $98,660
