Job summary

S&ME is hiring Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) Inspectors to join our Transportation team across North Carolina, including Asheville and other cities. You'll oversee contractor activities, ensure safety and quality, and contribute to delivering critical infrastructure.

This mid-level to lead role emphasizes independent work on medium-sized projects or as part of larger teams, with compensation based on experience and bonuses for relevant certifications.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience in highway construction or inspection preferred.
• Active NCDOT certifications are desirable (QMS Roadway, Conventional Density, Concrete Field Technician, Erosion Control Level II, Nuclear Gauge).

Responsibilities

• Oversee earthmoving, paving, bridge construction, and traffic control per plans and safety standards.
• Inspect erosion control and environmental compliance; perform material sampling and testing.
• Prepare daily inspection reports; document contractor performance and payments.
• Record material quantities and help maintain project timelines.
• Attend progress and safety meetings with contractors, engineers, and stakeholders.
• Conduct DBE/EEO compliance surveys.

Education

High school diploma or GED

Civil Engineering Technology or Surveying Technology degree (substitute for 1 year experience)
