Job summary

S&ME, Inc. seeks Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) Inspectors to join our Transportation team across North Carolina, including Asheville, Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Wilmington, and surrounding areas.

You’ll oversee contractor activities to ensure safety, quality, and regulatory compliance on highway, bridge, and roadway projects. Mid-level or lead technician role with potential to make technical decisions, work independently on medium projects or with teams on larger bids.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Experience in highway construction or inspection preferred.
• Technical degree may substitute for one year of experience.
• Active NCDOT certifications (QMS Roadway, Conventional Density, Concrete Field Technician, Erosion Control Level II, Nuclear Gauge) desirable.
• Strong English communication (oral and written) skills required.
• Solid math skills and knowledge of units (weight, volume, etc.) required.
• Travel flexibility and willingness to work variable schedules.

Responsibilities

• Oversee construction activities (earthmoving, paving, bridge work, traffic control) to ensure compliance with plans and safety standards.
• Inspect erosion control and environmental measures while performing material sampling and quality testing.
• Prepare detailed daily inspection reports, document contractor performance, and process payment records.
• Conduct calculations, maintain material quantity records, and track project timelines.
• Attend progress and safety meetings with contractors, engineers, and stakeholders to resolve issues.
• Perform DBE/EEO compliance surveys to verify inclusivity and workforce standards.
