Job summary

The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is seeking a dedicated Transportation Provider to assist with transportation needs for citizens and the public, including individuals with disabilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating vehicles within multiple areas including Norfolk and Omaha, ensuring a pleasant experience for all passengers.

Applicants must possess a high school diploma (or GED), hold a valid driver’s license, and be willing to obtain key certifications. Preference is given to Ponca Tribe members and individuals with experience working with Native American organizations.

Qualifications

  • Able to obtain First Aid, CPR, and Defensive Driving Course certification within three months of hire.
  • Successfully pass drug and alcohol testing, motor vehicle, education, character, and criminal background checks.
  • Experience working with Native Americans or Native American organizations is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide transportation for Ponca Tribe citizens and the general public in a professional manner.
  • Operate vehicles, wheelchair lifts/securements, and scheduling software.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and appropriate monthly records.
  • Assist passengers with getting on/off the vehicle and collect fares.
  • Follow planned routes according to a time schedule.

Job description

Incumbent will be primarily responsible for meeting the transportation needs for Ponca Tribe of Nebraska citizens and the general public, including persons with disabilities.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Responsible for providing transportation for Ponca Tribe of Nebraska citizens and the general public including persons with disabilities in a cheerful, pleasant and professional manner, including but not limited to the areas of Norfolk, Niobrara, Omaha, Sioux City and Lincoln.
  • Transporter will operate vehicles, wheelchair lifts/securements, computers, cell phones, scheduling software and other equipment as necessary.
  • Assists passengers to and from the vehicle.
  • Maintains a clean and presentable vehicle according to policy or direction of supervisor.
  • Maintains appropriate monthly records and reports.
  • Work closely and cooperatively with Ponca Tribe of Nebraska staff in order to meet transportation needs.
  • Follows a planned route according to a time schedule.
  • Keeps track of when passengers get on/off the vehicle via transportation software.
  • Collects fares for each transport as applicable and maintains proper record keeping.
  • Continuously learns and implements all new procedures, regulations and requirements.
  • Able and willing to drive in adverse weather conditions.
  • Responsible for inspecting vehicles at the beginning of each day.
  • Maintain complete confidentiality & honor the Privacy Act.
  • Recognize the need to respect the rights, dignity, and privacy of riders.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain or attain CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Attends and completes Passenger and Safety Securement, Defensive Driving, Distracted Driving and Drug and Alcohol Awareness courses.
  • Follows the drug and alcohol policy and testing requirements.
  • Know and follow the mission, organization, program requirements, and policies of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska.
  • Be well versed in and abide by transportation laws, rules and regulations.
Relationships and Authority

This position has no supervisory duties.

Working Environment and Physical Demands

Minimum to high stress due to many scheduled activities. Sits, stands, bends, lifts, twisting and moves intermittently during work hours. Must be able to work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and at times, hostile people.

Qualifications
Minimum
  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access programs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Able and willing to travel.
  • Possess a Class B CDL with passenger endorsement.
Preferred
  • First Aid, CPR and Defensive Driving Course certified.
  • One or more years experience working with Native Americans or Native American organizations.

Preference will be given to Ponca Tribe of Nebraska members or members of a federally recognized Tribe. However, all qualified individuals are eligible.
