Job summary

City of Des Plaines seeks a maintenance worker to perform a broad range of labor for city facilities, grounds, and infrastructure. This role involves heavy manual tasks, equipment operation, and adherence to safety standards.

The position requires the ability to work varied shifts, respond to emergencies after hours, and collaborate with a Public Works team to maintain water systems, streets, and utilities. A CDL with required endorsements must be obtained within 120 days.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; 1–2 years maintenance/repair experience accepted.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor and operate tools safely.
• Must be able to work shifts outside normal hours and respond to emergencies.
• Knowledge of basic building systems, carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance, repair, and construction tasks on city facilities and infrastructure.
• Inspect and maintain water distribution components and sanitary/storm sewer structures.
• Respond to residential complaints and emergencies; participate in snow removal operations.
• Operate a variety of power construction equipment; report defects and coordinate with supervisor.
