Job summary

The City of Asheville is hiring a Sanitation Driver I Lead to supervise a small crew and operate heavy sanitation equipment. CDL B is required; you will manage routes, safety, and daily records while delivering solid waste collection services to residents.

Responsibilities include training staff, coordinating with the supervisor, and ensuring timely, safe operations across assigned routes and events as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• At least 2 years of sanitation experience preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina CDL B.

Responsibilities

• Leads a crew of 1-3 employees to collect solid waste with a rear packer truck; trains staff and ensures safety.
• Performs supervisory duties: approves time, trains staff, and participates in hiring actions.
• Drives rear-loading sanitation trucks along assigned routes; ensures timely completion and safety.
• Collects trash and bulky items, verifies disposal eligibility, and reports issues.
• Follows safety procedures and maintains vehicle equipment; ensures proper operation.
• Operates equipment and tools; performs basic maintenance and documents activities.
• Communicates with supervisor, staff, and the public to coordinate work.
• Handles department documentation and data entry; supports reports and records.
• Performs other tasks as assigned by Public Works.
