Georgetown University is seeking a Cataloging Assistant for the Law Library to catalog and create metadata for materials in multiple formats across languages and subjects. You will maintain metadata in the Law Library’s catalog and digital repositories, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

Reporting to the Head of Cataloging and Metadata, you will conduct original and copy cataloging, and assist with special projects to support the department's operations in a hybrid work environment.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required.
  • 3–5 years of library experience.
  • Familiarity with spreadsheet, database, and cloud-based document storage apps.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Catalog materials and create metadata for print, electronic, online, and multimedia items.
  • Apply metadata to digital collections and maintain OCLC local holding data for serial titles.
  • Perform original and copy cataloging for monographs, serials, and Special Collections materials.
  • Collaborate with Access Services, Collection Development, Digital Initiatives, and Acquisitions on special projects.

Reporting to the Head of Cataloging and Metadata, this position is responsible for the ongoing maintenance of metadata in the Law Library’s catalog and digital repositories to ensure their accuracy and reliability. Job responsibilities include applying metadata to digital collections, original and copy cataloging for monographs, serials, rare books and materials from Special Collections, and the maintenance of OCLC local holding data for serial titles. The Cataloging Assistant frequently carries out special projects or other assigned duties to adapt to the changing needs of the department and the Law Library. Additional duties may include special tasks or projects to keep the department operating efficiently and effectively.Work InteractionsUnder the supervision of the Head of Cataloging and Metadata, work is performed according to priorities set by the Department Head and within established departmental guidelines and procedures. This position also works closely with staff from Access Services, Collection Development, Digital Initiatives, Special Collections, and Acquisitions to carry out special projects as assigned.Requirements and QualificationsRequired:High School Diploma3-5 years of library experienceKnowledge of standard academic library practices and procedures.Familiarity with spreadsheet, database, and cloud-based document storage applications.Ability to work as part of a team in a complex and changing environment.Strong oral and written communication skills.Preferred:Bachelor’s degree.Experience with cataloging tools and standards (e.g. OCLC Connexion, RDA, LC Classification, LC Subject Headings)Familiarity with law and/or legal materials.One year of cataloging experience, preferably in an academic setting.Experience with a library services platform, such as Ex Libris Alma.Flexibility to take on new responsibilities and projects as needed.Work Mode DesignationThis position has been designated as Hybrid.
