Job summary

Northwestern Medicine seeks a Chaplain to provide spiritual care, counseling, and bereavement support to patients, families, and staff in a hospital setting. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, educate on directives, and lead spiritual care services, while maintaining chaplain duties and on-call coverage as needed.

The role emphasizes adherence to ethics policies, HIPAA compliance, and ongoing professional certification while contributing to a patient-centered care environment.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in theology, religion, pastoral care, spiritual care, or divinity from an accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or in process of completing one unit within 90 days of hire date.
• Preference for ordination or good standing; Four (4) Units of CPE and Board Certification.

Responsibilities

• Delivers a ministry of spiritual care, counseling, and emotional support to patients, families, and staff.
• Identifies ethical dilemmas and communicates with Ethics Committee Chairs as needed.
• Leads interdisciplinary clinical team activities and care conferences.
• Provides end-of-life and bereavement support.
• Educates patients and staff on Advanced Directives and Goals of Care conversations.
• Develops and leads spiritual care services within the hospital.
• Serves as spiritual liaison between the hospital and community with HIPAA-compliant referrals.
• On-call for spiritual care coverage, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Supports CALM/Mindful Moments and attends to cultural/spiritual dynamics.
• Maintains chapel/sacred spaces and supplies, and keeps records up to date.
• Maintains board certification and annual CEU requirements.

Education

Master’s degree in theology, religion, pastoral care, spiritual care, or divinity

One unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or in progress (within 90 days)

Four Units of CPE / Board Certification (preferred)
