Job summary

Northwestern Medicine Catherine Gratz Griffin Lake Forest Hospital seeks a Chaplain to provide spiritual care, counseling, and support to patients, families, and staff. The role includes on-call coverage nights, weekends, and holidays, with two weekend call shifts per month and one overnight shift during the week.

The position emphasizes adherence to ethical standards, collaboration with the Ethics Committee when needed, and leadership in interdisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in theology, religion, pastoral care, spiritual care, or divinity from an accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience
• At least one (1) unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or in process of completing one (1) unit of CPE within 90 days of hire date.
• Ordination and/or in good standing within one’s faith tradition or certifying organization (preferred)
• Four (4) Units of CPE, Board Certification (preferred)

Responsibilities

• Delivers a ministry of spiritual care, counseling, consultation, worship, prayer, sacraments, and spiritual/emotional support services to patients, families, and hospital personnel/medical staff for holistic care.
• Identifies and clarifies ethical dilemmas and determines if ethics consult is needed.
• Participates in interdisciplinary clinical team activities related to planning and coordinating patient care.
• Provides end of life support and bereavement support as needed.
• Educates patients and hospital personnel on Advanced Directives and Goals of Care conversations.
• Develops and leads spiritual care services within the hospital in collaboration with the Spiritual Care Department.
