Job Description

Cashiers’ responsibilities include greeting customers in a friendly manner, answering their questions, performing cash register functions, assisting with general store upkeep, and occasionally assisting with bookwork.

Qualifications

• 3-12 months of cashier or retail experience preferred

Key Responsibilities

• Greet customers and invite them into the cashier lane
• Perform cash register functions proficiently
• Direct customers to merchandise or request help using radio
• Answer customer inquiries in person or by phone
• Suggest add-on merchandise
• Lift heavy or awkward items
• Handle customer complaints professionally and courteously
• Maintain security measures
• Create a friendly atmosphere and leave a good impression
• Assist with returns/exchanges and process defective slips
• Manage customer special orders
• Communicate out-of-stocks and new item requests
• Assist with stocking, receiving, pricing, and tagging
• Keep shelves and displays tidy
• Assist with store cleaning and maintenance
• Maintain a neat checkout area
• Process rainchecks and handle farm plan charges
• Other duties as assigned by management

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to learn phone answering, filing, ten-key, typing, and register functions
• Good verbal communication skills
• Basic math and light bookwork skills
• Ability to perform maintenance and some construction tasks
• Ability to draft and interpret correspondence
• Reliable, accountable, presentable, positive attitude, friendly, honest, patient

Physical Demands

Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs., walking, standing, bending, reaching, dexterity, and light grasping. Occasional lifting over 50 lbs., climbing stairs, squatting. Must work shifts including nights and weekends, and maintain attendance. Vision adequate for job functions. Manual dexterity required for operating computers and registers.

Work Environment and Conditions

Primarily inside the store; some outside work in varying weather conditions. Fast-paced environment with deadlines and sales targets. Potential hazards include burns, cuts, electrical, and mechanical risks. Exposure to dust, fumes, odors, and poor ventilation. Protective devices may be required.
