Job summary

Biltmore Estate seeks interpreters for its Carriage Program to enrich guest experiences with engaging historical interpretation during carriage rides. You will warmly greet guests, navigate safety protocols and help with boarding while highlighting estate history and local flora and fauna.

Beyond guiding tours, duties include assisting with horse care, barn maintenance and occasional special projects, all while delivering world-class service to guests on weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma (or GED).
  • At least 1 year of related experience; 2 years in historic interpretation preferred.
  • Knowledge of horses and equestrian care strongly preferred.
  • Outstanding guest service and communication skills.
  • Must obtain AED, CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record for last 3 years; age 19+.

Responsibilities

  • Assist driver with feeding, grooming, harnessing and hitching horses to the carriage.
  • Follow daily schedule for horses, carriages and drives.
  • Maintain safety policies; carry radio, first aid kit and other gear.
  • Greet guests, confirm departure times and collect liability waivers as needed.
  • Instruct guests on boarding safely and assist their entry onto the carriage.
  • Provide historical interpretation and point out flora/fauna during the ride.
  • Assist guests with unloading and thank them for visiting.
  • Keep barn, stalls and guest areas clean and organized; store equipment properly.
  • Assist driver with post-ride tasks and closing procedures; help with other projects as needed.
  • Support other guest services and special events as required.

Job DescriptionThe Interpreters for the Carriage Program will be responsible for providing information regarding the estate’s history and interpreting natural points of interests for our guests during their ride. The primary responsibilities of this position focus on providing our guests with a safe, comfortable, informative and enchanting carriage ride experience. Secondary duties include assisting the driver with feeding, watering and grooming the horses, harnessing and hitching the horses to the carriage, and helping with the cleaning of the barn, carriages, equipment and all guest areas.Schedule can vary, but is generally 7:45am-6:15pm, Friday-Sunday.Essential Job Duties1. Assist the driver in the feeding, grooming, harnessing and hitching of the horses to the carriage.2. Follow the schedule of horses, carriages and drives to be used for each day3. Adhere to all operating policies, procedures and safety guidelines. Be sure that your carriage is equipped with a radio, first aid kit, halter, lead line, umbrellas, lap blankets, etc.4. Warmly greet guests upon arrival, confirm departure times, and make sure that each guest has signed a liability waiver if the ticket agent needs assistance or if you are picking up guests at a location away from Deerpark.5. Offer any necessary instruction to guests and assist them in safely boarding.6. While the driver proceeds on the designated route at a walking pace your job is to focus on the guests. Provide historical interpretation, field general and estate specific questions, offer photo opportunities, point out flora and fauna, and interact with guests in a positive, professional manner to provide an enjoyable ride.7. Upon returning to the carriage barn, assist the guests in safely unloading from the carriage and thank them for their visit.8. Throughout the day, keep the barn aisle, stalls and all guest areas free of manure and debris. Properly store wheelbarrow and pitchforks after each use.9. Following the last carriage ride of the day, assist the driver with unhitching and unharnessing of the horses, wipe down tack as needed and store in harness room, brush down horses and turn out to pasture, follow closing procedure for the barn area and secure all areas as instructed.10. Interpreters may also be called upon to assist with other unexpected guests services and occasional special projects such as trail and/or carriage maintenance, barn cleaning, pasture and fence work, decorating for special events or private drives, historical research, and other assignments as requested.QualificationsHigh school diploma (or GED). Additional education, training, and/or certification(s) related to the equestrian field preferred.2. At least one (1) years of related experience. The ideal candidate will have two (2) years of experience in historic interpretation. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Preferably, candidates will have had prior experience in the same or similar role.3. Knowledge of horses and equestrian care strongly preferred. The ability to anticipate, identify, and troubleshoot issues desirable.4. Demonstrated commitment to the delivery of world class internal and external guest service.5. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills; must be comfortable in and effective at communicating clearly with guests, vendors, and other audiences.6. Must be able to quickly acquire knowledge of the history of the estate and the Asheville area.7. Ability to be proactive and take initiative; should be able exercise good judgment in anticipating and addressing issues.8. Applicants must have or be able to obtain AED, CPR, and First Aid certification.9. Must have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record for the last three (3) years, and be at least 19 years of age.
