Job summary

Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School is seeking a full-time Carpentry teacher for grades 9-12. You will develop lesson plans, demonstrate carpentry skills, and ensure safe operation of tools in a shop setting.

You will grade student progress, communicate with families and counselors, participate in IEP meetings, and contribute to a positive learning environment while meeting contract requirements and school goals.

Qualifications

  • Must hold the Chapter 74 teaching license or be eligible to obtain it.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of full-time employment experience directly related to carpentry.
  • Passing score on each carpentry exam (written and performance).
  • Possession of a current MA Contractors Supervisor License.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently with students, staff, and the public.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable using computers and software.
  • Prior teaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches carpentry full-time to students in grades 9-12 and develops lesson plans.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of carpentry materials, equipment, tools, and processes.
  • Instructs pupils in safety precautions and safe tool operation.
  • Grades and monitors student progress using reports and competency lists.
  • Communicates with employers, parents, and school counselors on progress.
  • Attends IEP meetings as required.
  • Provides supervision and extra help to students.
  • Attends meetings as required by the contract.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Superintendent-Director.

Job Description
JOB GOAL:

To develop in each pupil an awareness and understanding coupled with the basic skills and knowledge applicable to carpentry in business or public sector; and to instill in each pupil safe working habits, the importance of continuation of his/her education, and the assets of reliability, competence, loyalty, and dependability.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Teaches carpentry skills and knowledge full-time to students in grades 9-12. Develops lesson plans, maintains a plan book, and organizes class time so that preparation, instruction, shop work, and clean-up activities can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of occupational materials, equipment, tools, and processes using standard or teacher-prepared models, mock-ups, sketches, and other instructional aids in accordance with the carpentry competency-based task listing.
  • Instructs pupils in the appropriate safety precautions and the safe operation and use of tools, machinery, and equipment.
  • Grades and monitors student progress through the use of progress reports, report cards, and student competency lists.
  • Communicates with employers, parents, and school counselors on individual pupil progress.
  • Attends special education Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, where the teacher’s presence is required.
  • Provides supervision and extra help to students where needed.
  • Attends meetings as required by the teacher contracts.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Superintendent-Director.
Physical Requirements

This position may require long periods of standing and lifting up to 50lbs. The teacher may also be required to operate hand tools and motor equipment and may work in confined spaces with exposure to dust, smoke fumes, and gases.

Terms Of Employment

Ten-month, school year position (183 days).

Initial salary will be established by the Superintendent-Director in accordance with the Teachers’ Contract.

Fringe benefits as outlined in the Teachers’ Contract.

Job Requirements

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be comfortable using computers and software.
  • Prior teaching experience preferred.
  • May have such alternatives to the above as the Superintendent-Director deems appropriate and acceptable.
