Job summary

Harford Technical High School seeks an experienced CTE Carpentry/Construction Teacher for its Workforce Development Program. This after-school role (2 days weekly, 3–5 p.m.) focuses on residential and commercial carpentry, NCCER certification, and hands-on problem solving for students planning apprenticeships or college pathways.

The position requires Maryland educator certification or eligibility, NCCER carpentry certification, and 3 years industry carpentry experience.

Qualifications

  • Holding or being eligible for a Maryland Educator Certificate.
  • Possession of NCCER instructor certification in carpentry.
  • Completed three years of industry-related work experience for state and NCCER certification in carpentry.
  • Classroom teaching experience is preferred.
  • Experience in construction with emphasis on carpentry skill sets.
  • Knowledge of pedagogy, curriculum, and instructional techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction and course/program management at the high school level in NCCER-related carpentry.
  • Demonstrate hands-on approaches to critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Teach teamwork, communications, and workplace technologies relevant to construction.
  • Collaborate with staff and post-secondary institutions to build career pathways.

Job description

CTE Carpentry/Construction Teacher - Workforce Development Program
Harford Technical High School

Provide instructional and leadership services that prepare students with the related academic, critical thinking, computer technology, workplace readiness, and technical skills essential to pursuing career pathways in carpentry and related construction careers. Primary program content relates to carpentry.

  • This is an after-school position that will operate twice a week from approximately 3-5 p.m.
  • This program is anticipated to run from September 2026 to June 2027
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

These are intended only as examples of the various types of job duties to be performed. Depending on the assignment these duties may require in-person attendance and/or virtual attendance based on the specific operational or instructional requirements of the assignment.

  • Provide instruction and course/program management at the high school level in areas of residential and commercial construction related to National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and implement a "hands-on" approach to critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed for current and future construction industry employment standards.
  • Provide instruction in teamwork, communications, problem solving, decision making and computer technology which relates to workplace and higher education skills needed in the construction industry.
  • Work with staff and post-secondary institutions to develop and maintain career pathways which prepare students for apprenticeship, licensure, community college or university degree programs in the construction trades areas.
  • Prepare instructional materials, maintain equipment, and manage materials of instruction which maximize the resources needed to deliver effectively a diverse instructional program.
  • Obtain NCCER program certification including documentation and verification of students' skills to NCCER curriculum content standards.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and lead student experiences in related student organizations.
  • Contribute to the mission of the school by striving to attain a school improvement plan and career completion goals.
  • Work with employers and community groups to promote and advance technical skills.
  • Participate in recruitment and selection of students.
  • Creates an instructional environment that is conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Communicates standards, achievements, and deficiencies to students and parents. Meets with students and parents.
  • Maintains complete and accurate student academic, attendance, and disciplinary records. Monitors and assesses students' academic progress.
  • Collaborates with school administrators, other teachers, paraeducators, parents, and community members in the education of students.
  • Attends staff meetings. Serves on various committees.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
SALARY

$42.13 per hour, non-benefitted

REQUIREMENTS
  • Hold or be eligible for a Maryland Educator Certificate in appropriate requisite area.
  • Possession of NCCER instructor certification in carpentry.
  • Completed three years of industry-related work experience for state and NCCER certification in carpentry.
  • Classroom teaching experience is preferred.
  • Experience in one or more of the major areas of construction with an emphasis on carpentry skill sets.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of pedagogy. Knowledge of curriculum, effective instructional techniques, instructional materials and equipment.
  • Skill in preparing, implementing lesson plans and instructing students. Skill in supervising students and managing behavior. Skill in communicating with students, their parents, administrators, and others. Knowledge of and skill in the use of database, internet, spreadsheet, word processing, and related applications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, parents and staff.
  • Ability to effectively maintain confidential information.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
  • Work requires the ability to bend, stand, and walk in the carpentry laboratory for extended periods of time on a daily basis.
