Job summary

Northern Kentucky University is seeking a Career Advisor to meet with undergraduate students and provide academic advising, particularly for freshmen and at-risk students. Job description

Position Title: Career Advisor

Position Type: Regular

Responsibilities
  • Meet with undergraduate students during scheduled and walk-in appointments.
  • Communicate with undergraduate students on advising issues.
  • Participate in Master Advising professional development training.
  • Generate and disseminate student reports.
  • Work within the HRIS system to review student information and help students register for classes.
  • Serve on committees within the department and across the university.
  • Provide academic advising to new freshmen, undecided/exploring, under‑prepared students, and probationary students at Northern Kentucky University.
  • Provide follow‑up with at‑risk students by effectively managing advising caseloads.
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of academic orientation programs.
  • Create presentations for students and other professionals on campus.
  • Implement the office’s assessment plan for teaching advising student learning outcomes and maintain accurate and up‑to‑date student records.
  • Participate in university‑sponsored professional development programs, the National Academic Advising Association, and the Kentucky Academic Advising Association.
  • Serve on university committees as assigned by the director.
Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree required; preferred qualifications are a master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling, Communication, Education, or other academic discipline with experience in academic advising. Minimum of two years academic advising experience in a higher education setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Strong organizational, attention to detail, and exceptional communication skills.
  • Ability to articulate an understanding of student development theory.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, especially at‑risk and undecided/exploring students.
Work Environment & Physical Demands

Valid driver’s license required and dependable vehicle. Some evening and weekend work is required.
