Job summary

Northern Kentucky University is seeking an Academic Advisor in the College of Health and Human Services to provide holistic advising for undergraduate and graduate students in online and on-campus formats.

The role emphasizes proactive student retention, persistence, and success, with collaboration across the CHHS Advising Center, Dean’s Office, and other departments. Evening/weekend availability may be required.

Qualifications

  • > Master’s degree required or preferred in Education, CPS, or Counseling.
  • > Previous advising experience preferred.
  • > Experience with diverse and underrepresented student populations.
  • > Experience with online students or health-related professions is preferred.
  • > Strong communication and interpersonal skills with attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • > Conduct individual advising appointments for undergraduate and graduate CHHS students in online and face-to-face programs.
  • > Provide personal and professional communication via meetings, email, phone, Skype, etc.
  • > Collaborate with CHHS Advising Center, Dean’s Office, and other departments.
  • > Engage in placement, transfer, graduation and degree-path issues to support student success.
  • > Generate and disseminate data reports from SAP and other university sources as needed.
  • > Collaborate on admissions, orientation, recruitment and retention events sponsored by Academic Affairs/Student Affairs.
  • > Attend Admissions’ events, student-focused outreach events, and relevant college/career fairs in the region.
  • > Serve CHHS and NKU committees as appropriate to duties/responsibilities.
  • > Participate in university-sponsored professional development programs (NACADA, Kentucky Academic Advising Association) is encouraged.

About the Role

The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) is accepting applications for an Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor will provide academic advising, guidance and support to undergraduate and graduate students. The Advisor will utilize holistic and proactive academic advising strategies towards goals of student retention, persistence, accomplishment, and success.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct individual advising appointments with undergraduate and graduate CHHS students in online and face-to-face programs.
  • Provide personal and professional communication (face-to-face meetings, email, phone calls, Skype, etc.) to undergraduate and graduate students on advising issues and questions.
  • Collaborate with other Advisors and staff in the CHHS Advising Center, Dean’s Office, and other departments within the college and across NKU.
  • Engage in placement, transfer, graduation, and other degree-path issues of students to ensure student success.
  • Generate and disseminate data reports from SAP and other university sources of information as needed.
  • Collaborate on admissions, orientation, recruitment and retention events sponsored by Academic Affairs/Student Affairs, and the college.
  • Attend Admissions’ events, student-focused outreach events, and relevant college/career fairs in the region.
  • Serve CHHS and NKU committees as appropriate to the duties/responsibilities of the position.
  • Participation in university-sponsored professional development programs, the National Academic Advising Association and the Kentucky Academic Advising Association is encouraged.
Qualifications
  • Master's degree; preferred degree in Education, College Student Personnel, or Counseling.
  • Previous advising experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate an understanding of student development theory.
  • Experience working with diverse and underrepresented student populations.
  • Experience working with online students or students in health related professions is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and exceptional communication skills are required.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations, strong teamwork skills, and ability to handle multiple tasks are also required.
