Job description

Position Title: Advisor Position Type: Regular
About the Role:

The Academic Advisor provides academic advising, guidance, and support to undergraduate students across all majors and minors within the Haile College of Business. Using a holistic and proactive advising approach, the Academic Advisor promotes student retention, persistence, achievement, and overall success. This position is part of a collaborative team of faculty and staff dedicated to student success within the Center for Student Excellence. Academic Advisors work closely with students to identify, implement, and support the most effective path to graduation, connect them with appropriate campus resources, and help them make informed academic and career decisions. Advisors build productive relationships with students, alumni, faculty, staff, and administrators across the university. Academic Advisors are expected to develop a strong understanding of the tools, systems, platforms, and organizational structures that support student success. They must maintain a thorough knowledge of university policies and demonstrate a commitment to best practices in academic advising. Members of the advising team serve as ambassadors for the Haile College of Business and are committed to collaboration, student success, creative problem-solving, and continuous professional development. Advise undergraduate students pursuing majors and minors in the Haile College of Business, including prospective, new, transfer, online, and continuing students. Communicate regularly with undergraduate students regarding academic planning, degree requirements, and other advising-related matters. Assist students in developing and achieving educational and career goals. Collaborate with campus partners and participate in admissions, orientation, recruitment, retention, and other student success initiatives within Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. Serve on university and college committees, such as the Academic Advising Council. Support the Center for Student Excellence through special initiatives, projects, and events. Complete the NKU Master Advisor Program, an internal professional development program designed to prepare advisors to provide high-quality academic advising for new and continuing students. Participate in ongoing professional development, including training, conferences, and educational opportunities, to remain current on university policies and best practices in academic advising.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of academic advising principles, student development theory, and student success best practices, or the ability to acquire this knowledge quickly.
  • Knowledge of university academic policies, degree requirements, curriculum, and higher education processes, or the ability to learn and apply them effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish trust, build relationships, and work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and diverse populations.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize competing responsibilities, manage multiple deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to interpret and explain policies, procedures, and degree requirements in a clear and student-centered manner.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Commitment to providing exceptional customer service and fostering an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive environment for students.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and the ability to quickly learn and effectively utilize student information and advising systems such as Workday, Navigate, etc.
Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Business, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field preferred. Minimum two years of experience in academic advising, student services, higher education, or a closely related field preferred. Experience in academic advising or other relevant higher education roles is preferred; a minimum of two years is strongly preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment. Regular use of a computer and other office equipment is required. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to support orientation, recruitment, advising, and student success events. Minimal physical demands; occasional lifting of materials up to 20 pounds may be required.
