Qualifications

Job Description

Nevada State University invites applications for the position of Career Advisor. Reporting to the Director of Career Services, the Career Advisor's main purpose is to help prepare and support students and alumni in achieving their educational, professionaland career goals. This includes providing career advising andeducation on topics such as, but not limited to, career explorationand/or major exploration, career planning, job and internshipsearch, application material review (resumes, cover letters, etc.),grad school search and planning, and interview skills. In additionto providing 1:1 advising, the position will also support thefacilitation of career events as well as presentations andworkshops for classrooms and programs. Other duties asassigned.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide holistic 1:1 career counseling and advising to studentsand alumni on: career and major exploration, job / internshipsearch processes and strategies, interview skills and techniques,resume / CV development, cover letter development, opportunitiesfor skill building and involvement (e.g. student clubs,volunteering, etc.), effective networking, job negotiationstrategies, graduate / professional school exploration andpreparation.
  • Facilitate career-related workshops, presentations andevents.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Director of Employer Relations tostay up to date on workforce trends and upcoming opportunities forstudents/alumni to connect with employer partners.
  • Implement data collection strategies to assess impact ofservices, events and programs.
  • Represent the Career Services Center at admission/recruitingevents, new student orientation programs, etc.
  • Support the training and supervision of student workers.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to remain informedabout current trends, policies, and best practices in careeradvising.
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accreditedinstitution.
  • At least two (2) years of experience working in highereducation, career/workforce development, training and development,human resources, job placement services, or a related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and professionalism.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectivelycommunicate and engage individuals through 1:1 advising, classroompresentations and workshops.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship(Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in student affairs, higher education,counseling, sociology, social work, human resources or a relatedfield.
  • Knowledge of career development and student developmenttheories and applications.
  • Experience with event planning and management.
  • Experience with Handshake CSM.
  • Knowledge of career readiness competencies (NACE; NationalAssociation of Colleges & Employers).
  • Knowledge or experience with Life Designprinciples/frameworks.
Salary & Benefits

Budgeted salary for this position is $54,285.00. Nevada StateUniversity offers excellent benefits, including 19.25% retirementmatch, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leavedays, 12 paid holidays, educational benefits, and three healthinsurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spendingaccounts or health savings accounts.
