Job summary

Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is seeking a Cardigan Lodge Caretaker to support guest services and facility operations at Cardigan Mountain, Alexandria NH. This full-time seasonal position includes housekeeping, guest assistance, and basic maintenance in a remote outdoor setting.

The role emphasizes customer service, teamwork, and adaptability in changing conditions, with room and board provided and a starting wage of $13.79 per hour. Seasonal dates apply, and safety is paramount in all duties.

Qualifications

  • 18 years and older.
  • Experience in hospitality or outdoor recreation preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service to guests and visitors.
  • Respond to guest complaints and requests professionally.
  • Inform guests about local recreation and lodge amenities.
  • Record weather and prepare daily activity reports.
  • Assist with daily cleaning and upkeep of rooms, bathrooms, shared areas, campsites, and privies.
  • Help check-in and check-out of lodge and campsite reservations.
  • Guide guests in use of the kitchen and perform final cleaning.
  • Build and tend a daily woodstove fire.
  • Assist with retail and membership sales in the lodge store.
  • Perform routine maintenance including trash, snow removal, and minor repairs.
  • Manage parking and traffic flow in the lot.
  • Support energy conservation and environmentally sound practices.
  • Maintain positive relations with local businesses and colleges.
  • Commit to a respectful, clean, and safe communal living environment.

Cardigan Lodge sits at the base of Cardigan Mountain in Alexandria, New Hampshire. The lodge offers a self-service experience to guests in the winter, complete with dynamic hiking and ski trail systems available just outside the front door. The reservation serves campers, with 26 primitive campsites, and a rustic cabin that sits half a mile from the summit.

AMC is seeking a Caretaker to aid the Manager in all aspects of facility operation. This entry level position entails a variety of customer service, housekeeping, and operational duties with a focus on providing an exceptional experience for each guest and visitor. The Cardigan Caretaker is a full-time, seasonal position. Room and board is $75.00 per week. The position requires excellent communication, teamwork skills, and consistent support of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s mission.

What You’ll be doing at AMC:
  • Create a positive experience for each guest and visitor by providing exceptional customer service
  • Respond to all guest complaints and special requests in a respectful and professional demeanor
  • Interact with guests by providing information on local recreation opportunities, lodge amenities, organizational efforts, and available programs
  • Record and post the weather daily. Complete a summarizing report on daily activities
  • Participate in the daily cleaning and upkeep of guest rooms, bathrooms, shared areas, campsites, and privies
  • Assist with the check-in and check-out of lodge and campsite reservations
  • Guide guests through use of the kitchen space and complete a final kitchen cleaning at the end of each day
  • Build and tend a fire in the woodstove daily
  • Assist with retail and membership sales in the lodge store
  • Complete routine maintenance of the facility and grounds to include trash and snow removal, food recycling, and minor building repairs. Remove ice and snow from buildings, walkways, systems, and fire exits daily
  • Participate in deep cleaning of lodge spaces and additional special projects as instructed
  • Oversee traffic in the parking lot and assist with parking when needed
  • Implement energy conservation and environmentally sound practices in daily operation
  • Retain positive interactions and connections with supporting businesses and colleges
  • Participate in the success of communal living by committing to a respectful, clean, and safe environment
QualificationsWhat AMC is Looking For:
  • 18 years and older

  • Physical abilities needed: Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds on-site and in the backcountry
  • Ability to travel safely in the backcountry in all weather conditions
  • Caretakers must be physically and mentally able to endure and enjoy solitude and extreme weather conditions
