Job summary

SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital – St. Charles is offering a Student Nurse Externship for nursing students actively enrolled in accredited programs.

The extern role supports an RN with patient care tasks under supervision, with a focus on applying classroom knowledge in a real hospital setting. Scheduling is flexible to accommodate school commitments, with the program designed to transition externs to Graduate Nurse Residency after RN program completion.

Qualifications

• Current enrollment in an accredited school of nursing and completion of first clinical rotation, or no more than 90-days post conferral date
• No experience required

Responsibilities

• Completes patient care tasks based on skills deemed competent in nursing school under direction of RN.
• Contributes to overall quality and safe care for patients by answering patients’ calls for help, taking vital signs, and monitoring condition.
• Assists with activities of daily living and prepares patients for discharge as indicated.
• Maintains supplies and equipment and communicates patient information to the team.
• Works as part of the care team to support transition to RN role.
