SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital is seeking student nurse externs to gain real-world clinical training under a dedicated preceptor. Under supervision, externs perform nursing care tasks and learn through 1:1 instruction across units while aligning with their school schedule.

The program ends upon graduation from nursing school with the goal of transitioning to the Graduate Nurse Residency program and permanent employment opportunities.

Program Length: The Student Nurse Externship ends upon graduation from nursing school with the goal of transitioning to a graduate nurse position and joining the Graduate Nurse Residency program.

Job Summary

Under supervision and in collaboration with other health care professionals, assists in performing a variety of nursing care services for patients.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements

Primary Responsibilities

• Completes patient care tasks based on skills deemed competent in nursing school under direction of RN.
• Contributes to overall quality and safe care for patients by answering patients’ calls for help, taking vital signs, and monitoring their behavior and physical condition for progress or deterioration.
• Creates a positive patient experience by assisting patients with activities of daily living, including baths, ambulation, feeding, skin care, personal and oral hygiene, and bed management.
• Assists and performs procedures such as dressing changes, enemas, ostomy care, toileting, turning, cough and deep‑breathing exercises, catheter care, specimen collection, and recording intake and output.
• Provides compassionate care, timely responses, open communication, and emotional support.
• Maintains charting and communicates information to team members.
• Participates in unit meetings, committees, and special projects.
• Informs licensed nurse of any changes in patient condition or needs.
• Prepares patients for discharge and accompanies them when appropriate.
• Stocks and maintains supplies and equipment with cost containment focus.
• Provides orientation to new patients and families.
• Works in a constant state of alertness and safety.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Current enrollment in an accredited school of nursing and completion of first clinical rotation.

Experience: No experience required.

Physical Requirements

• Constant standing and walking; frequent hearing and speaking with patient and team.
• Frequent lifting/carrying 0‑25 lb; occasional lifting 25‑50 lb; occasional patient handling.
• Frequent reaching, gripping, keyboard use.
• Frequent vision use at short and long ranges; occasional vision for spatial judgment.
• Occasional bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, sitting, squatting; repetitive movements.
• Occasional use of smell and occasional driving.

Professional License and Certifications

Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) - American Heart Association (AHA) required.
