Position Summary:
The Cardiac Sonographer I performs an extensive range of cardiac ultrasound studies in the clinical and research settings at various locations. Examinations may include Transthoracic, Exercise, and Pharmacologic Stress Echocardiograms, as well as special procedures including but not limited to echo guided myocardial biopsies, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy studies, and additional procedures as dictated by research protocols and clinical trials. The Cardiac Sonographer I works closely with Staff Sonographers, Level II and III, Medical Staff, and Investigators to ensure all exams are completed according to established policies and procedures. This position will also include clinical instructor responsibilities to the JHH Ultrasound students and Cardiology Fellows in the Echo Lab.
Education:
Graduation from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Program (CAAHEP) - accredited Diagnostic ultrasound program is required. Additional clinical experience or credentials may be considered in lieu of some education.
Work Experience:
Successful completion of a CAAHEP accredited Diagnostic program is required. Experience as a Cardiac Sonographer in a hospital-based environment or additional experience as a vascular technologist is desirable.
Licensure/Certification:
Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) by The American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) by Cardiac Credentialing International (CCI) is required. Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) is preferred but not required.
Knowledge/Skills:
Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and cardiac disease is required. Knowledge of medical terminology and the physics of ultrasound and how this relates to image acquisition is necessary. Advanced sonographic skills are essential to obtain and document a complete examination or research protocol. High-level analytical ability is needed to obtain appropriate images and required measurements for a diagnostic echocardiogram. Interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to provide technical guidance and instruction for cardiac ultrasound interns, clinical and research fellows, and attending physicians. Strong eye/hand coordination skills are required, along with high visual acuity. The ability to proficiently describe significant clinical findings or developments in research subjects in a timely and comprehensive manner is essential. Must be able to perform transthoracic echocardiograms in a 45-minute time slot in an outpatient setting.
