Job summary

Harborview Medical Center's Interpreter Services Department seeks a Medical Interpreter fluent in Cantonese and Mandarin to enable patient access to medical care. You will provide oral, sight and written interpretation, transmitting information accurately between patients and providers and encouraging direct communication.

Responsibilities include managing cross-cultural encounters, offering sight translation in clinical settings, and assisting patients with medical, financial, or other forms.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent and two years interpretation experience in a clinic or hospital setting.
• Certification or qualification as a medical interpreter from Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters.
• Equivalent education or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications, except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Responsibilities

• Provide oral, sight and written interpretation for Cantonese and Mandarin.
• Transmit information accurately between patient and provider or staff.
• Encourage direct communication between patient and provider or staff.
• Manage complexity of cross-cultural encounter.
• Provide sight translation in the presence of a provider and/or other medical staff.
• Assist patients to complete medical, financial, or other forms.
