Job summary

American University is seeking an Operating Engineer to support the operation, maintenance, and repair of campus utility systems on the Washington, DC campus. You will handle after-hours needs, mentor staff, and maintain records for reliability and compliance.

The role requires 1–3 years in related plant operations, a valid DC Steam Engineer license, and a strong ability to read blueprints and operate BAS systems. This is a full-time, on-site position with multiple shifts.

Qualifications

  • Required education: High school diploma or equivalent; 3rd Class DC Steam Engineer’s license (non-restricted) by hire date.
  • Licenses/certs: 3rd Class DC Steam Engineer’s license; valid driver’s license; ability to obtain university driving privileges.
  • Preferred: Facilities Management Certificate and LEED Green Associate Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and repair campus utility systems.
  • Support after-hours and weekend requests.
  • Train and mentor new staff; review work of others.
  • Maintain records of inspections and maintenance in LMS.
