Job summary

American University seeks an Operating Engineer to support operation, maintenance, and repair of campus utility systems under supervision. The role includes after-hours and weekend coverage and mentoring of newer staff, with shifts from morning to night as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3rd Class DC Steam Engineer’s license (non-restricted) by date of hire.
  • Must possess a current and valid United States driver’s license at the time of hire.
  • Preferred: Facilities Management Certificate.
  • Preferred: LEED Green Associate Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, and repair campus utility systems (steam, chilled water, heating water) and related equipment.
  • Maintain records for inspections, operation, maintenance and repair to optimize scheduling and reliability.
  • Inspect campus utilities systems and ensure boiler/chiller water chemistry within limits.
  • Support after-hours and weekend requests via the customer response center.
  • Complete approved training and maintain an Individual Development Plan in the LMS.

Education
