Job summary

Howard University in Washington, DC is seeking a Security Officer for 24-hour patrols to protect life and property on campus and off-site facilities.

Responsibilities include responding to emergencies, detaining violators when necessary, and coordinating with campus authorities. This role requires a high school diploma or GED and an AA in criminal justice or related field; US citizenship; the ability to obtain a Special Police Commission; and flexible scheduling, including nights and weekends.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED; four years of security or law enforcement experience.
• AA degree in criminal justice or related field.
• US citizenship with no criminal record; valid DC driver’s license.
• Special Police Commission or ability to obtain one within six months.
• Must pass physical, agility and drug tests; academy completion.

Responsibilities

• Respond to emergency calls within the University’s jurisdiction.
• Detain individuals using force only to protect life or property.
• Notify suspects of Miranda rights and report incidents to a supervisor.
• Assist in controlling large crowds and managing disturbances.
• Patrol assigned posts, inspect buildings, enforce laws and regulations.
• Appear in court or University hearings as a witness when required.
