Job summary

Howard University is seeking a Security Officer to maintain safety within the campus and off-site facilities. The role requires patrolling, responding to incidents, and enforcing university and District of Columbia laws with professional discretion.

The position demands adherence to safety guidelines, completion of required trainings, and the ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends. A police academy background and a clean driving record are essential.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of criminal law, including elements of offenses, rules of evidence, laws of arrest, search and seizures, and other law enforcement principles.
• Ability to read and write administrative reports, and to describe cases verbally.
• Ability to pass a University-sponsored police academy and maintain required certifications.

Responsibilities

• Respond to emergency calls involving criminal activity within the University’s jurisdiction.
• Patrol assigned posts, inspect buildings and grounds, and enforce university and local laws.
• Detain individuals when necessary to protect life or property and notify supervisors.
• Prepare reports, participate in investigations, and provide testimony in court or hearings as required.
• Maintain composure in explosive or dangerous situations and support evacuation procedures as directed.
