Job summary

Howard University is seeking a dedicated Security Officer to maintain safety guidelines and provide 24-hour patrol across the campus and select off-site facilities.

Responsibilities include responding to emergencies, detaining suspects when necessary, and reporting incidents. The role requires a high school diploma or GED, plus security experience and a clean background; a police academy or commission may be needed within six months.

Qualifications

• High School Graduation or GED required.
• 4 years of responsible work experience in law enforcement or security.
• AA degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
• U.S. citizenship with no criminal record; valid DC driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Responds to emergency calls within the University’s jurisdiction.
• Detains individuals suspected of offenses using force only when necessary.
• Notifies suspects of Miranda rights and reports details to a Patrol Supervisor.
• Controls crowds and events with mature judgment and tact.
• Patrols assigned posts and enforces university laws and policies.
• Assists in evacuations and serves as a witness in court as needed.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
