Job summary

Virginia Institute of Marine Science seeks a Security Guard to patrol and secure Gloucester Point Campus, monitor facilities, and respond to alarms. Reporting to the Security Officer, you will support events and after-hours operations and ensure safety for staff, students, and visitors.

Requirements include a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, and prior security experience. The role is hourly, non-exempt, with variable hours and potential overtime.

Qualifications

• Education: High School graduate or equivalent.
• Valid Driver's License.
• Experience in a security position or related field.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and security procedures.
• Ability to implement security plans.
• Commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with staff and visitors.
• Ability to stay attentive and report conditions.
• Clear and effective communication regarding security needs.
• Ability to work independently within procedures.
• Must meet physical requirements and mobility to patrol and use stairs.

Responsibilities

• Monitor campus buildings and grounds to ensure safety of staff, students, and visitors and report suspicious activity.
• Conduct routine inspections and patrol designated areas.
• Support building security via routine patrols and locking/unlocking of doors and rooms.
• Provide escort services and assist with parking, traffic control, and events.
• Respond to fire alarms and maintain security posts as needed.
