Job summary

University of Central Florida (UCF) is seeking a Recycling Specialist I to manage campus refuse. Responsibilities include operating recycling trucks and equipment, collecting materials daily, and maintaining containers while adhering to safety standards and regulations.

The role supports campus sustainability and requires able handling of hazardous situations. The position, based on Orlando campus, offers a 6:00am–2:30pm schedule from Monday to Friday, with a starting salary of $16.80 per hour

Qualifications

  • Completion of 9th grade or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to communicate in conversational English to work effectively with customers and team members, operate electronic equipment, comprehend standard safety procedures and utilize telecommunication devices.
  • Able to operate a vehicle as necessary.
  • Must be able to operate essential tools and equipment.
  • Must be adaptable in assignments.
  • Demonstrate capabilities in interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, calculation, reading, evaluating, comprehension, and organizing.
  • Ability to utilize standard office software applications for work order systems such as IWMS.
  • Must be able to use EH&S approved chemicals to perform essential job functions daily.

Responsibilities

  • Drive and operate vehicles including recycling truck and hydraulic lifting device, a state truck with power lifting/dumping mechanisms, pick-up trucks and occasional heavy lifting.
  • Pickup refuse materials from campus locations daily; transport and off-load material into various containers and facilities; Transport materials off site when appropriate.
  • General cleaning up of campus; picking up refuse and emptying of refuse receptacles.
  • Perform phases of landscape maintenance and installation, and maintenance of equipment as directed by immediate supervisor.
  • Monitor and wash vehicles and equipment to ensure safe operations and proper usage, and compliance with state and municipal regulations.
  • Perform special collection of refuse, recyclable and items, such as appliances, computers, furniture, equipment, and papers.
  • Coordinate pick-up at customer58s convenience, meet with customer to assess disposal needs.
  • Perform minor repair, maintenance and painting of refuse containers and receptacles.
  • Maintain lids and locks on refuse containers.
  • Conduct periodic inspections and inventory of containers.
  • Monitor contaminated quality control of materials collected, and identify hazardous materials that are not disposed of properly.
  • Pick up small supplies needed to perform daily tasks such as gloves, cleaner, and tools.
