Job summary

Johns Hopkins Public Safety seeks an University Special Police Sergeant to lead unarmed campus security operations, supervise staff and contract guards, and ensure adherence to safety policies.

The role requires supervisory experience in safety or law enforcement, a valid US driver’s license, and successful completion of background and medical screenings, with eligibility for DC police certification where applicable.

Qualifications

• HS Diploma or GED required.
• Prior experience in corporate/public safety or law enforcement.
• 2+ years of supervisory experience in safety or law enforcement.
• Valid US driver's license with clean driving record.
• Pass university background check and drug screen.
• Pass police psychological suitability exam.
• Citizenship proof and age ≥21 as required by MPD.
• CPSI Campus/Uni Special Police certification or willingness to attend CPSI.
• DC license eligibility for University Special Police Sergeant.
• Ability to obtain handgun license as University Special Police Officer in DC.

Responsibilities

• Supervise staff and contract security, enforce rules, and initiate corrective action.
• Ensure compliance with policies and regulations.
• Evaluate performance evaluations of subordinates.
• Coordinate with Lieut. for shift coverage and scheduling.
• Monitor CCTV and alarms, respond to alerts.
• Provide crime prevention training and conduct daily briefings.
• Conduct shift drills and maintain training records.
• Investigate incidents and file reports; liaise with law enforcement.
• Work flexible shifts including holidays/weekends.
• Other duties as assigned.
