Job summary

Johns Hopkins University Public Safety is seeking a University Special Police Sergeant who is motivated, enthusiastic, and customer-service-oriented; this is an unarmed position. The role involves supervising staff, enforcing rules, coordinating shifts, and ensuring overall campus security operations.

The successful candidate must meet rigorous supervisory and licensing requirements, pass extensive background checks, and be able to obtain required DC handgun credentials.

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of progressively responsible supervisory experience in public safety/law enforcement.
• Valid U.S. driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Must pass background, health screening, drug test, and police psychological suitability exam.
• Must have CPSI Campus and University Special Police certification or willingness to obtain.
• U.S. citizenship and 21+ years of age; valid DC license to carry handgun (DC).
• Ability to obtain license to carry a handgun as a University Special Police Officer in DC.

Responsibilities

• Supervise public safety staff and contract security and enforce rules; initiate corrective action as needed.
• Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations.
• Evaluate performance and prepare evaluations for subordinates.
• Monitor CCTV, alarms, and respond to alerts; supervise events and security personnel.
• Coordinate scheduling with Lieutenants to ensure adequate shift coverage.
• Investigate reports of offenses and prepare timely reports; liaise with law enforcement.
