Job summary

The University of Michigan's Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) is hiring University Public Safety Officers for the Michigan Medicine Security Services. Officers report to a Security Sergeant and will work to protect the medical center and off-site health system buildings.

These positions require a high school diploma or GED with security experience, and a valid driver's license. The role includes patrols, incident reporting, customer service, and collaboration with local agencies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and 1 year of experience in security, fire, military, customer service or emergency management.
• Experience enforcing fire, safety and security practices.
• Ability to handle emergency situations and operate related equipment.
• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Valid driver's license with a driving record under 6 points.

Responsibilities

• Ensure public safety, protect assets and liaison with state and local police, fire and security agencies; act calmly in emergencies.
• De-escalate potentially violent and non-violent situations with medical staff and assist in managing combative or intoxicated individuals.
• Patrol the medical center and off-site health system buildings; monitor fire, infant protection, security, and access control alarms.
• Detect safety hazards and criminal elements.
• Use customer service skills and an inclusive approach to communicate with all community members.
• Prepare incident and security reports.
