Job summary

The College of New Jersey seeks a Campus Police Officer to safeguard students, staff, and visitors across the campus. You will patrol by foot and vehicle, respond to incidents, and prepare written reports while upholding state and college regulations.

Qualified applicants must have a high-school diploma, a NJ driver’s license, pass medical and psychological screenings, and hold PTC certification; firearm qualification and shift flexibility are required. NJ residency and background checks apply.

Employment Type: Full-time, 40 Hours Per Week

Internal salary: $68,381.11 - $120,209.69 - Steps 1-11

External salary: $68,381.11 - $78,242.17 - Steps 1-4

Union Positions: The internal salary range is used for applicants who are current NJ state employees with underlying classified status for promotional calculations who meet the requirements below. The external salary range is used for candidates who are not NJ state employees who meet the requirements below.

Position Overview

The Office of Campus Police Services provides overall safety and security of the institution, its community, and property. Campus Police enforces laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations of the State of New Jersey, the Township of Ewing, and the College of New Jersey. The Campus Police is committed to community policing consistent with the College mission, public service, excellence, and professionalism at all times.

Responsibilities
  • Under the supervision of a Campus Police Sergeant, Lieutenant, or other supervisory officer and in cooperation with municipal, county, and state law‑enforcement officers, provide safety and assistance to persons and visitors on campus.
  • Participate in vehicle and foot patrol, traffic control, and investigations on campus.
  • Ensure consistency in work quality, provide timely accurate reports, and enforce laws and regulations.
  • Maintain accountability for all vehicles and equipment in use.
  • Promote teamwork and community policing by fostering professional relationships with co‑workers, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ensure courteous and fair dealings with all members of the public.
  • Take part in police activities intended to provide a safe and secure campus environment, including order maintenance, assistance, and protection of persons and property.
  • Conduct foot and vehicle patrols to detect security problems, safety hazards, and provide surveillance of campus or assigned areas.
  • Takes appropriate action to safeguard lives and property on campus or its portions.
  • Checks conditions of buildings and takes steps to protect them from criminal damage and theft.
  • Executes official documents such as warrants, summonses, subpoenas, as directed.
  • Completes and records necessary forms, fingerprints, photographs, etc. to document arrests, investigations, and complaints.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of relevant laws, statutes and codes including U.S. and N.J. constitutional law, criminal law, policies, procedures, traffic and vehicle law, departmental and county law‑enforcement policies, township ordinances, and college rules and regulations.
  • Provides general assistance to persons, including information on locations, events, regulations, provisions of the law and other matters.
  • Keeps essential Campus Police records and files.
Qualifications – Required
  • High‑school or vocational high‑school diploma, or approved equivalent certificate.
  • Valid driver’s license in New Jersey.
  • Pass a thorough medical examination, psychological test, and drug test.
  • Receive and maintain PTC Police Training Commission certification.
  • Ability to qualify with firearms, including a shotgun license, and to drive day/night or inclement conditions.
  • Ability to walk up and down staircases.
  • Ability to walk campus grounds at night and during inclement weather.
  • Ability to communicate in English on the radio and in written reports.
  • May require lifting or moving heavy objects.

Employer Qualifications

Employment at TCNJ is contingent upon successful completion of background checks, reference checks, and verification of identity and authorization to work in the United States (Form I‑9).

Residency Requirement

New Jersey residency must be obtained within one year of employment, per the New Jersey First Act Public Law 2011 C.70.
