Job summary

Savannah Technical College is seeking a Campus Police Lieutenant to assist the Chief of Police in managing the college's police department, safety and emergency readiness on campus. This role directs patrols, training, and compliance with Georgia POST and college policies. Reporting structures may vary by need.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or higher, POST certification, and proven leadership in public safety; salary is commensurate with education and experience.

Job Description:

The Police Lieutenant is responsible to the Chief of Police forassistingwith the planning, organization, administration, and daily operation of the Savannah Technical College Police Department. This position provides direct supervision over assigned personnel, supports campus safety and security operations,assistswith emergency preparedness, and ensures that departmental activities are conductedin accordance withcollege policy, TCSG requirements, applicable laws, and professional law enforcement standards.

The Police Lieutenant may serve as a training coordinator andis responsible forassistingwith the development, delivery, and documentation of law enforcement, safety, and emergency response training for police personnel, students, faculty, and staff. This position typically reports directly to the Chief of Police; however, reporting structure may vary based on operational needs.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assign, plan, coordinate, and direct the activities of assigned campus police personnel to meet the safety and security needs of Savannah Technical College.

  • Supervise sergeants, officers, and other assigned personnel in the day-to-day operation of campus police services, security functions, and training activities.

  • Assistwith the development and implementation of short- and long-term goals for departmental training, staffing, emergency preparedness, and operational readiness.

  • Ensure officersmaintainrequired Georgia P.O.S.T. training, annual training hours, firearms qualifications, and other certifications required by law, policy, or assignment.

  • Maintain or oversee training files, records, and documentation related to officer training, certifications, and professional development.

  • Monitor and supervise personnel to ensure compliance with Savannah Technical College rules and regulations, TCSG policies, department procedures, state and federal laws, and court directives.

  • Interpret and apply state and federal laws, rules, regulations, policies, and legislation as they relate to campus police, security operations, emergency preparedness, and college safety.

  • Assist the Chief of Police in consulting with college administrationregardingGeorgia criminal law, law enforcement procedures, safety concerns, and the feasibility or appropriateness of seeking prosecution for criminal offenses.

  • Assist the Chief of Police in developing, reviewing, and implementing police department policies and procedures, including policies related to weapons, use of force, emergency response, training, reporting, and officer conduct.

  • Assistwith preparing and recommendingaccuratebudget information related to training, equipment, supplies, and operational needs within establishedtime frames.

  • Oversee orassistwith the purchase, inventory, maintenance, and accountability of training equipment, department equipment, uniforms, supplies, and assigned resources.

  • Prepare, review, approve, andsubmitreports required by federal, state, system, college, and departmental policy, including activity reports, incident reports,Clery‑related documentation, and other administrative reports.

  • Review reports for completeness, accuracy, accountability, professionalism, clarity, and compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures.

  • Review and approve time records, payroll information, leave documentation, schedules, and other administrative documentation for assigned personnel.

  • Provide forthe safety and security of students, faculty, staff, administrators, visitors, facilities, and college property.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of campus police operations, routine responses, emergency responses, staffing plans, training efforts, and service delivery.

  • Respond to emergency and non‑emergency calls forserviceas necessary.

  • Assistwith emergency preparedness, crisis management, active threat response planning, evacuation procedures, disaster response, and coordination with internal and external partners.

  • Attend meetings with local law enforcement, emergency management personnel, college leadership, TCSG representatives, and other public safety partners as assigned.

  • Maintain Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council certification and all other certificationsrequiredfor the position.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, regulations, and law enforcement procedures.

  • Knowledge of Savannah Technical College and TCSG policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge ofCleryAct requirements and campus safety reporting responsibilities.

  • Knowledge of law enforcement equipment, techniques, training standards, and best practices.

  • Knowledge of campus safety, security, emergency preparedness, and crisis response procedures.

  • Strong supervisory, leadership, decision‑making, and problem‑solving skills.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Skill in training, mentoring, coaching, and evaluating personnel.

  • Skill in strategic and tactical planning.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations and working with the public.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or equivalent

  • Current Georgia P.O.S.T. certification as a peace officer

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability to maintain required training and firearms qualifications

  • Ability to work assigned shifts, weekends,special events, and emergencycalloutsas needed

  • Five (5) yearsof prior law enforcement experience

Preferred Qualifications

Prior supervisory, investigative, training, or command level law enforcement experience preferred.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours per day.

  • Ability to walk or move on foot for extended periods, including long distances across campus facilities and grounds.

  • Visual ability sufficient to read computer screens, review reports, detect color‑coded information,observesafety andemergencysignage, andoperate job‑related equipment.

  • Hearing ability sufficient to detect specific noises, understand radio traffic,monitorequipment operation, and

  • communicatewith students, faculty, staff, visitors, and law enforcement personnel.

  • Ability to speak, read, and write in English.

  • Ability tooperatea motor vehicle.

  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergency situations, hazardous conditions, and calls for service.
