Job summary

Alfred University is seeking a Grounds Maintenance position to manage all aspects of campus upkeep and support for events. The role includes snow removal, equipment operation, and outdoor maintenance across campus facilities.

The candidate should have a high school diploma (two-year horticulture degree preferred) and at least two years of landscaping experience, with a valid driver license and plant knowledge. On-call duties and emergencies may be required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Two-year degree in horticulture preferred.
• Two years of experience in landscaping/grounds maintenance.
• Knowledge of operation of small and large engines and equipment; valid driver license.
• Knowledge of various plants, plant types, and their care.
• Must be available for on-call, emergencies, nights, weekends.

Responsibilities

• Snow removal.
• Operate equipment: fork truck, plow truck, forklift, mowers, weed eaters, chainsaw, backhoe, snow blower.
• Stockpile and apply salt and sand in winter.
• Maintain equipment: oil changes, lubrication, minor repairs.
• Prune shrubs and trees.
• Maintain lawns: mow, rake, fertilize, seed, aerate.
• Maintain shrub/flower beds; weed, mulch, edge.
• Deliver intercampus materials; mail, supplies, furniture.
• Maintain parking lots, sidewalks, stairways; clean/repair/paint/plow.
• Paint athletic fields; football, soccer, lacrosse, rugby.
• Move heavy equipment and furniture.
• Install campus signage; brick pavers; drains work.
• Assist with setup of major campus events.
• Supervise and train work-study and summer help.
• Maintain safety compliance and SDS information.
