Job Description
Job Title: Substitute Cafeteria Team Member
Reports to: Cafeteria Manager/Food Nutrition Director/Campus Principal
Department: School Nutrition Services (Child Nutrition Program)
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, portion, and serve breakfast and lunch following standardized recipes and USDA/TDA guidelines.
- Set up serving lines; restock, rotate, and label food items (FIFO).
- Operate and clean kitchen equipment (ovens, warmers, dishwashers) safely and correctly.
- Wash, rinse, and sanitize dishes, utensils, and food contact surfaces per HACCP procedures.
- Follow all food safety, allergy, and special-diet protocols; maintain accurate production and temperature logs.
- Receive deliveries; verify quantities; store food to temperature and safety standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized kitchen, storeroom, and dining area; assist with trash removal and floor care.
- Provide friendly, respectful customer service to students and staff; support positive cafeteria culture.
- Report to assigned campus(es) on short notice; other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED (preferred).
- Texas Food Handler Certification (or obtain within 30 days of hire).
- Ability to lift/move up to 40 pounds and stand for extended periods in a fast-paced environment.
- Basic math and recordkeeping; able to follow written and verbal instructions in English.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to accept assignments on short notice.
Preferred Qualifications
- School nutrition, restaurant, or institutional kitchen experience.
- Training in HACCP, food allergies, and/or ServSafe.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish).
Compliance & Safety
- All hires must pass a national criminal history background check and fingerprinting in accordance with Texas Education Code §§ 22.0834–22.0835.
- Adherence to USDA/TDA School Nutrition Program regulations, district HACCP plan, and Texas Food Establishment Rules.
