Job description

Job Title: CAD Detailer Joist and Steel Deck Design

Job Description

The Detailer converts customer drawings into clear, manufacturable detail drawings using AutoCAD 2D and supports the full project lifecycle from design through delivery. In this role, you spend roughly half of your time creating detailed plans in AutoCAD 2D and the other half coordinating internally and with customers to resolve design issues, manage approvals, and ensure successful project completion. You work on multiple projects simultaneously, typically 56 at various stages, and receive training on a proprietary AutoCAD 2D addin used for joist and steel deck design.

Responsibilities
  • Transform customer drawings and specifications into simple, accurate detail drawings using AutoCAD 2D for joist and steel deck building systems.

  • Create complete manufacturing plans and documentation that allow production teams to fabricate and deliver structural steel joist and deck products to customers.

  • Work on 56 projects at different stages of completion, prioritizing tasks and managing deadlines across multiple concurrent assignments.

  • Use a proprietary AutoCAD 2D addin (training provided) to support joist and deck design, detailing, and structural steel detailing workflows.

  • Coordinate regularly with internal teams, including detailers, team leads, checkers, and corporate support staff, to ensure drawings meet quality, accuracy, and project requirements.

  • Communicate with customers and fabrication plants throughout the design approval process, clarifying requirements and resolving questions about loads, connections, and design details.

  • Review decking design drawings and structural connections to confirm they meet structural load requirements and project specifications.

  • Participate in internal drawing checks and reviews, incorporating feedback from team leads and checkers to improve accuracy and consistency.

  • Support problem solving related to project delivery, including design conflicts, constructability issues, and schedule constraints.

  • Maintain high levels of organization to track project status, documentation, and approvals across multiple jobs.

  • Meet established metrics and performance expectations related to accuracy, quality of drawings, timeliness, and project deadlines.

  • Adapt quickly to changing daytoday priorities and collaborate closely with team members in a fastpaced environment.

  • Give and receive constructive feedback to continuously improve processes, drawing standards, and project outcomes.

  • Contribute to a team structure that typically includes 46 detailers, a team lead, and a checker, supporting a collaborative and qualityfocused culture.

  • Engage in training activities during the initial onboarding period, including reworking completed projects to learn detailing standards and project management processes.

Essential Skills
  • Handson AutoCAD 2D drafting experience within a related industry (or school) such as construction, building design, or structural engineering.

  • Strong ability to multitask and manage several projects simultaneously, with a high level of organization.

  • Flexible mindset with the ability to adjust quickly to changing daytoday tasks and priorities.

  • Comfort being held accountable to metrics, results, and the accuracy and quality of drawings produced.

  • Goaloriented and deadlinedriven approach, with a strong focus on meeting project schedules and avoiding missed deadlines.

  • Ability to give and receive feedback in a professional, constructive manner.

  • Collaborative working style, contributing positively to teambased design and detailing efforts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with joist and/or steel deck design, especially in a structural steel or building systems environment.

  • Direct experience with steel joist and deck fabrication processes or working with fabrication plants.

  • Experience in structural steel detailing, joist design, or steel deck design.

  • Experience in leadership, mentoring, or training within a drafting or detailing team.

  • Interest in ongoing professional development, including potential use of tuition reimbursement and educational opportunities.

  • Comfort working with proprietary software addins and learning new design tools and workflows.

Work Environment

This role is based in a structural steel joist and deck building systems environment, supporting specification, engineering, and detailing work for projects across North America. The Fort Wayne office supports production from multiple manufacturing plants in the United States and Mexico, providing exposure to a wide range of project types and locations. The work setting is fast paced, with important deadlines and a strong emphasis on accuracy and ontime delivery. You have your own cubicle within a newly renovated, openconcept office located in the Electric Works building in downtown Fort Wayne, featuring abundant natural light and convenient access to food and recreation options. The layout places detailers close to team leads and other colleagues to encourage collaboration and quick communication. The culture emphasizes being "flexible to the finish," trying new approaches, focusing on customer satisfaction, and providing strong employee incentives, including overtime opportunities, profit sharing, bonuses, paid time off, holidays, and programs such as tuition reimbursement and college scholarships. Dress is typical for a professional office environment, and you work primarily with officebased tools such as AutoCAD 2D and related design software in a steady, employeefocused organization that offers internal mobility and growth across different groups.
