About the job CACO Administrative Assistant

Casualtyand Assistance Calls Officer Administrative Assistant

Casualty Assistance Officers are responsiblefor notifying family members when a service member has died. A CAO will provideas much information as available regarding the circumstances of the member'sdeath and answer any questions. The CAO will immediately begin the process of aidingin making funeral or memorial arrangements as appropriate.

As a CACO Administrative Assistant yourresponsibility is providing administrative support for the tasks related toCACO program. You will assist with coordination of funeral honors for entitledpersonnel within the Navy Region Southeast, NAS Jacksonville, FL. You will alsoassist beneficiaries in the preparation and submission of claims to variousgovernment agencies for benefits to which they may be entitled.

This role is considered a high visibility position and requiresexcellent communication skills. You’ll collaborate with various outside governmentagencies, discuss benefits with affected family members, and provide reports tosenior personnel. The work schedule for this position may include weekends andholidays due to the unusual nature of the work.

Daily Duties
  • Receive and report notifications ofcasualties
  • Research and process disposition cases
  • Ensure burial arrangements are made inaccordance with procedures
  • Review federal and state laws to determinebenefits and entitlements for families
  • Advise and provide counseling on benefitsprovided by law
  • Receive calls from next of kin (NOK) andfuneral directors for funeral honors
  • Determine eligibility for military honors andrequest appropriate documentation
  • Prepare and enter “horns request” into “HONORSTracker” database
  • Forward honors tasking to appropriate commands
  • Field questions from next of kin (NOK)funeral directors, and funeral honor coordinator
Skills
  • Proven experience as an administrative assistantor providing casualty assistance
  • Working knowledge of Navy automated systemsand procedures
  • Must have high level of interpersonal and problem-solvingskills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. Position continuallyrequires demonstrated poise and tact.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite,with a focus on Outlook and Word
  • Excellent time management skills and theability to prioritize work
  • Attention to detail and problem-solvingskills
  • Excellent written and verbal communicationskills
  • Strong organizational skills with the abilityto multi-task
  • Must be capable of conducting meetings andconferences and possess the ability to demonstrate informative and persuasivespeaking
