Job summary

TEKsystems in Fairfax, IA seeks an Entry-Level Communications Technician to support installation and maintenance of low-voltage systems in commercial settings. You will install outlets, route cabling, and assemble telecom closets to ensure scalable, compliant infrastructure.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Install communication outlets, including floor monuments and wall-mounted systems.
• Route voice, data, and fiber optic cabling through walls, ceilings, and conduits.
• Pull and manage cable pathways using fish tape and standard methods.
• Prepare cables: measure, label, organize, and maintain slack.
• Install cable management systems such as trays, J-hooks, and racks.
• Build telecommunications closets with backboards, racks, patches, and fiber hardware.
• Install grounding and bonding for telecom equipment.
• Perform fire-stopping and route cabling through fire-rated walls.
• Terminate and test low-voltage devices and cabling.
• Read blueprints and specs to ensure quality installations.

Communications Technician - Entry Level

Job Description

We are seeking an Entry-Level Communications Technician to support the installation and maintenance of low-voltage communication systems in commercial construction and renovation environments. This role involves installing and routing structured cabling, supporting telecommunications infrastructure, and assisting with network closet buildouts.

Key Responsibilities

• Install communication outlets, including floor monuments, surface-mount boxes, and wall-mounted outlet systems.
• Route and install voice, data, and fiber optic cabling through walls, ceilings, conduits, and modular furniture systems.
• Utilize fish tape and other industry-standard methods to pull and manage cable pathways.
• Perform cable preparation tasks, including measuring, labeling, organizing, dressing, and maintaining proper cable slack.
• Install and support cable management systems such as cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridle rings, and trapeze supports.
• Build and organize telecommunications closets by mounting backboards, racks, patch panels, cross-connects, and fiber optic hardware.
• Install grounding and bonding systems for telecommunications equipment and infrastructure.
• Perform fire-stopping procedures, install sleeves, and route cabling through fire-rated walls and core penetrations in accordance with applicable codes.
• Terminate and test low-voltage devices and communication cabling systems.
• Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and project documentation to ensure quality installations.

• Comfortable working at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds when necessary.
• Capable of distinguishing wire and cable colors, reading detailed labels, and recognizing audible signals.
• Willingness to travel throughout branch and regional service areas as needed.
• Commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and continuous process improvement.

Pay And Benefits
