The Opportunity
HMP Global is seeking an accomplished, consultative Business Development Director to generate meaningful revenue growth within either our Managed Care or Dermatology portfolio. This is a senior individual-contributor role for a business-development professional who understands how pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies evaluate marketing, education, research, and engagement opportunities, and who can translate client priorities into integrated, high-value programs.
The successful candidate will have direct experience calling on and selling to pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology companies. Prior experience in Managed Care or Dermatology is not required. We are more interested in the depth of your life-sciences client relationships, your command of complex consultative sales, and your record of building and closing profitable business.
About HMP Global
HMP Global is a healthcare events and education company that connects healthcare professionals, experts, and industry partners through live events, trusted education, digital content, data, and year-round engagement. Our portfolio serves healthcare communities across multiple therapeutic and professional areas, while HMP Collective develops customized solutions for life-sciences clients, including strategic marketing programs, content, research, and educational initiatives.
What You Will Sell
- Event sponsorships and exhibit opportunities associated with HMP Global's live and virtual programs
- Digital advertising and audience-engagement programs across HMP Global's channels
- Custom, integrated marketing programs developed through HMP Collective
- Educational initiatives and strategically aligned programs designed for healthcare-professional audiences
- Research, insights, and other customized solutions that respond to client objectives
Primary Responsibilities
- Own revenue growth. Develop and execute a portfolio-level sales plan that delivers against annual bookings, revenue, and profitability goals.
- Develop pharmaceutical and biotechnology business. Prospect, engage, and build relationships with brand, commercial, marketing, market access, medical affairs, and other relevant decision-makers, and agency partners when appropriate.
- Build strategic client relationships. Establish credibility with senior stakeholders, understand business priorities and budget cycles, and become a trusted resource for integrated engagement solutions.
- Lead consultative discovery. Uncover client objectives, target audiences, unmet needs, timing, budget, decision criteria, and measures of success before recommending a solution.
- Create integrated solutions. Collaborate with internal portfolio, content, education, marketing, research, creative, digital, and event teams to develop compelling programs that are strategically sound, executable, and commercially viable.
- Manage complex sales cycles. Lead opportunities from prospecting and discovery through proposal development, presentation, negotiation, contracting, close, and handoff to delivery teams.
- Maintain a disciplined pipeline. Use the company's CRM consistently to document activity, advance opportunities, assess probability, forecast accurately, and communicate risks and next steps.
- Expand existing accounts. Identify cross-portfolio and year-round opportunities, increase share of wallet, and create pathways to multi-program or longer-term client relationships.
- Bring market intelligence into the business. Monitor client priorities, competitive activity, budget trends, and market developments; share actionable insights that strengthen offerings and positioning.
- Represent HMP Global. Attend select industry conferences, client meetings, and HMP Global events to cultivate relationships and advance commercial opportunities.
Required Qualifications
- Five or more years of progressive business development, sales, strategic partnerships, or account-growth experience in healthcare, life sciences, medical communications, healthcare media, professional education, events, or a related field
- Demonstrated experience selling directly to pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology companies; experience limited to general B2B, consumer, or non-healthcare event sales will not, by itself, meet this requirement
- Documented success achieving or exceeding meaningful revenue targets and closing complex, consultative opportunities
- Ability to sell integrated solutions rather than isolated products, including combinations of sponsorship, advertising, content, education, research, digital engagement, and live-event opportunities
- Working knowledge of pharmaceutical commercial structures, client budgeting and planning cycles, agency relationships, procurement processes, and compliance-sensitive environments
- Strong prospecting, discovery, presentation, proposal-development, negotiation, and closing skills
- Proficiency with CRM-based pipeline management, opportunity tracking, forecasting, and sales reporting
- Executive presence and the ability to communicate credibly with senior client stakeholders and internal leadership
- Ability to work independently, prioritize a broad opportunity set, and remain accountable for results in a highly autonomous environment
- Willingness and ability to travel for client meetings, industry conferences, and HMP Global events as business needs require
Preferred Qualifications
- Established relationships within pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare agency, or related life-sciences organizations
- Experience selling event sponsorships, exhibits, healthcare media, medical communications, custom marketing, professional education, market research, or omnichannel programs
- Experience developing large, multi-component proposals and negotiating agreements with multiple stakeholders
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience
