Job Summary / Basic Function

The Small Business Development Center ( SBDC ) Business Consultant provides consulting assistance to pre-venture and existing business owners in areas of business planning, financing, loan packaging, marketing, demographics, and other areas of management and technical support to promote small business growth, expansion and productivity. In-depth support includes presenting seminar topics and use of on-line databases. The Business Consultant manages and coordinates client contacts and individual caseloads. Travel to outreach locations within the SBDC’s service area is required. Travel to state and national training events and conferences are required when scheduled.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES :

  • Will be expected to travel on a regular basis to various outreach centers located throughout the 10-county jurisdiction of the SBDC to provide management assistance to small businesses that are located at a distance from the main office of the PennWest University SBDC
  • Will occasionally be expected to work evening and/or weekend hours to conduct client meetings, present workshops, or represent the SBDC at networking events.
  • Coordinates and assigns work responsibilities to graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Conducts initial client interviews.
  • Is responsible for capturing and reporting all client and milestone information into the customer relationship management ( CRM ) system, Neoserra.
  • Develop personal business skills on a continuing basis through business publications, textbooks, business and community contacts, credit or no credit courses, and participation in the activities of appropriate professional organizations.
  • Provides in-depth business consultation services in a variety of business fields to the client with excellent communication and interpersonal skills in one-on-one consulting and through small business seminars.
  • Provides consulting on business finance and assists clients in determining financial needs and potential sources. This includes being familiar with community programs targeted toward lending opportunities as well as coordinating and evaluating loan packaging among financing sources.
  • Assists business clients in preparing of business loan proposals, including the development of a structured narrative business plan, extensive and detailed financial projections, collateral documentation, equipment lists, resumes, and other documents as required.
  • Coordinates the applicability and referral of clients to various programs tied to activities and/or funding as well as referrals to outside
  • organizations which have the ability to assist the client.
  • Is familiar with and interfaces directly with SBDC specialty programs, including International Trade, Government Procurement, Technology
  • Commercialization, the Product Development Center, and any new program that is developed.
  • Represents the PennWest University SBDC in the PASBDC network, within the university, the local community, the region,and the state in a positive and appropriate manner.
  • Is responsible for the coordination of efforts to generate client support letters to legislators.
  • Maintains direct responsibility for management and scheduling of client caseload, in the primary and designated outreach offices, to provide consultation services to clients in the ten-county jurisdiction of the PennWest University SBDC .
  • Monitors client/business progress, assists in client assessment of business and makes recommendations regarding problem areas
  • Presents workshops to pre-venture and existing business owners as needed and coordinated by the SBDC . These workshops include the First Step (How to Start and Finance Your Business) class periodically throughout the year, and any other classes as determined by Business Consultant, Director, and Assistant Director.
  • Performs other related work as required by the Director and Assistant Director.

OTHER DUTIES :

  • The business consultant is responsible for capturing and reporting all client and milestone information into the customer relationship management ( CRM ) system, Neoserra. The business consultant customarily works with general guidance from the assistant director and director and is responsible for identifying and reporting problem areas that require higher-level attention. All business plans are reviewed and edited by the assistant director before they are released to the client.
  • Business consultants work with significant independence in making decisions regarding each individual client. Such decisions relate to the accuracy, completeness, and acceptability of various financial documents and planned implementations which impact directly on the success of the business client and in turn the success of the SBDC . Highly irregular issues are often referred to the assistant director prior to action being taken.
  • Judgment of the business consultant is highly critical to the success of the SBDC ; the business consultant is responsible for meeting the goals set by the organization in terms such as numbers of clients served, number of businesses opened, number of employees hired in those businesses, annual increases in revenues and profits attributable to the operations of those businesses and the amount of capital formation in assigned SBDC territories.
  • The outreach consultant will assign and coordinate work to the graduate and undergraduate students. Assigned tasks would include inputting projected financial statements and business plan information in Microsoft office, researching industry and marketing information, and filing, copying, scanning and binding. All work is returned to the outreach business consultant for editing and review prior to submission to the Assistant Director or Director.

Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • An understanding of financial statements, tax-returns, accounting concepts and general bookkeeping.
  • How to use Microsoft Office products proficiently (Word, Excel, and PPT )
  • Public Speaking and ability to lead training on business management topics.
  • Ability to manage several clients at a time and consult to achieve positive outcomes and client satisfaction.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Minimum of Education / Training

Required Education Summary

Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a business related field and two years of relevant work experience
