Bus Mechanic Instructor – Senior Maintenance Instructor
The role involves training new and current foremen, repairmen, service persons, and bus cleaners to ensure workers have the skills required to maintain NJ TRANSIT equipment and/or facilities.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Research, develop, implement, maintain, and review maintenance training courses and related items, including working with manufacturers and vendors to learn computerized diagnostic software and design and execute technical training for all Maintenance employees.
- Present formal maintenance training programs which lead to qualification of bus maintenance personnel, repairmen and mechanics.
- Conduct impromptu garage training as required to ensure proficiency in areas including but not limited to electric and hybrid propulsion, aftertreatment, air brakes, multiplex systems, storage batteries, and HVAC.
- Assimilate new technology, including online training and manufacturer-provided web-based training, into course offerings.
- Audit vendor training to ensure quality and acquire training aids.
- Appraise and provide counsel for complex technical troubleshooting. Validate training objectives. Audit training results and suggest adjustments to Maintenance Training management as necessary.
- Perform upkeep maintenance on training center equipment and training aids.
- Interact with maintenance support groups as required to assist with maintenance procedures implementation.
- Must be self‑motivated and team‑oriented.
Education, Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent; two (2) years of additional formal technical training plus at least five (5) years applicable experience in a diesel powered vehicle maintenance program.
- Preferred: Two (2) years in an instructional capacity.
Knowledge and Skills
- Complete understanding of 12 and 24 volt electrical circuitry.
- Ability to comprehend fully electric and hybrid propulsion, storage batteries, and HVAC systems.
- Knowledge of electronic controls including engines, transmissions, body controls, ABS, and HVAC systems.
- Proficiency in heavy‑duty diesel engines, transmissions, HVAC, air brake systems, multiplex systems, hydraulics, aftertreatment, and pneumatics.
- Knowledge of computer‑based diagnostic software and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite software (preferred).
Physical Demands
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Physical fitness and stamina to stoop, crawl, work laying down, climb stairs, and work in confined areas.
Other Conditions
- Be able to work in a noisy, fast‑paced environment.
