Job summary

The Town of Blacksburg is seeking a skilled bus maintenance technician to inspect, repair, and service transit vehicles. You will perform preventive maintenance on gas and diesel powered vehicles, diagnose issues, and test drive to ensure safety and reliability.

Responsibilities include tire/brake work, wheel chair lift repairs, parts replacement, and training new staff. A Class B CDL with Air Brakes and P endorsement is required; must pass drug tests as part of safety programs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Three to five years of automotive and power-driven equipment maintenance experience.
• Valid commercial driver’s license (Class B with Air Brakes and P endorsement) in Virginia with a satisfactory driving record.

Responsibilities

• Checks buses and ensures buses are in safe operating condition.
• Performs repairs or holds buses as needed.
• Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on gas and diesel vehicles and diagnoses problems.
• Makes repairs as instructed to vehicles and equipment.
• Performs road tests on vehicles.
• Changes tires and brakes; rotates and balances tires; performs front end alignments.
• Changes oil, fluids, and lights.
• Diagnoses and repairs wheelchair lifts.
• Replaces parts; rebuilds bus parts and assemblies.
• Trains new staff on safe equipment use and operation.
• Picks up parts.
• Cleans shop regularly.
