Job summary

Base pay range

$31.39/yr - $49.66/yr

Position Summary

Under general supervision, performs a range of intermediate level technician assignments. Assists Equipment Engineers during the design phase of new equipment or during overhaul/rehabilitation in the preparation and interpretation of specifications. Monitors and inspects buses to ensure adherence to specifications.

Qualifications
Primary Responsibilities
  • Visits various manufacturers’ plants for extended periods to inspect buses, equipment, and component parts for compliance with specifications.
  • Maintains familiarity with all bus equipment used by the Authority and current technology related to vehicle equipment, machinery, and tools used in the Equipment Engineering Section.
  • Assists in developing specifications for passenger vehicles and related parts.
  • Prepares general layouts and detailed drawings of equipment, units, and components.
  • May perform campaign modifications to major bus subsystems.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Reporting to this position are no subordinate jobs.

Challenges
  • Required to be away from home for extended periods.
  • Working with internal and external parties, including vendors, international partners, operations, and maintenance teams.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least two (2) years of verifiable work experience in bus or rail car repair, modification, and construction, or a certificate/diploma in diesel engine vehicle repair from an accredited trade school.
  • Must have or be able to obtain an Illinois CDL driver’s license.
  • Must pass drug and alcohol testing as mandated by the Federal Transportation Administration.
Physical Requirements
  • Sitting for long periods, standing, visual acuity, manual dexterity, and working with computer keyboards.
  • Physically working on top of, underneath, or inside equipment during inspections and tests.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of bus construction and operation, testing of units and components, and relevant regulations.
  • Ability to interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and specifications.
  • Proficiency with office software and vehicle-specific programs (MMIS and Oracle).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to maintain detailed logs, and good relations with manufacturing representatives.
Working Conditions
  • Office environment, bus shops, garages, manufacturing plants.
  • Travel to manufacturing plants for extended periods.
  • Exposure to conditions common in bus shops and garages.
