Primary Purpose
Ensure safe, efficient and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated location.
Qualifications / Skills
- Obtain and maintain a valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B) and required endorsements; maintain all required licenses, permits, and certificates. Completion of High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Acceptable driving record as determined by the Texas Department of Public Safety and by SBISD and any other local, state and federal requirements. Complete and pass the Texas School Bus Driver’s Course, allied courses and examinations. Eligible for coverage under the district’s vehicle insurance program.
- Certification of good health as required by the State of Texas and signed by a licensed physician. Ability to pass department physical dexterity test. Must have an interest in the education and welfare of children.
- Must be 18 years and older.
Special Knowledge / Skills
- Pass alcohol and drug tests on pre‑employment, random, post‑accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis in accordance with law and district policy; complete required bus driver safety training; follow written and verbal instructions.
- Read, write and perform basic mathematical skills; read and interpret routes and maps; complete assigned forms and reports; communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of student discipline procedure; manage student behavior; operate bus and evacuate bus safely; ability to climb in and out of the emergency door.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Vehicle Operation
- Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
- Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.
- Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify Fleet Manager of needed repairs.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.
- Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.
Student Management
- Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
- Communicate with teachers and parents regarding student behavior while on bus.
- Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
- Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
Safety
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure safe operation before driving.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and reflector(s).
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor.
- Report hazardous conditions along the route.
- Practice safety techniques in lifting, climbing, and performing other job duties.
- Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus when needed.
Other Responsibilities
- Operate two‑way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
- Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands
- Continual sitting; pushing, reaching above shoulders, repetitive hand, foot, arm motions.
- Work positions include kneeling and climbing, with extended reach above head and in front of body.
- Load and unload vehicle, lifting and pulling up to 20 pounds.
- Climb in and out of bus through service door multiple times per shift.
- Enter and exit the bus through emergency exits. Heavy lifting and dragging up to 50 pounds.
- Specific visual and hearing requirements for driving; mandatory Department of Transportation Physical and District health standards.
Environmental Factors
- Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature and humidity.
- Excessive noise (intermittent); periods of constant noise.
- Dust, fumes, smoke, or gases.
- Long hours of driving; irregular work hours.
