Job Description

Job Title: Bus Assistant/Transportation Attendant

Reports To: Director of Transportation

Classification: Auxiliary (Skilled Labor)

Wage/Hour Status: Non-exempt

Days: 177

Salary: See Compensation Plan for Auxiliary Pay Plan, Pay Grade 301

Contract: None

Date Revised: 2/6/2025

Primary Purpose: Ride on the bus to assist the driver by maintaining student discipline and providing individual student support.

Qualifications/Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Must be 18 years and older.
• Day care, nursing home or related experiences dealing with special needs individuals preferred.
• Ability to work with fellow employees.
• Mature judgment.
• Proficient oral and written communication skills.
• Physically able to climb in and out of the school bus emergency door to assist in evacuating the bus in an emergency. Heavy lifting and dragging (50) pounds and over.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Student Management

• Monitor student behavior, maintain student discipline and intervene to maintain a safe ride on bus.
• Provide student‑specific personal care service for students using a wheelchair or other assistive devices, or for students who have a medical condition/physical condition.
• Escort and assist students with special needs.
• Maintain personal conduct and appearance of a professional manner and that serves as an example to children.

Safety

• Aid driver in maintaining order and safety.
• Perform emergency bus evacuation of students on bus, if needed: walking to rear of bus, exiting the rear door, and/or lifting students in emergency situations.
• Assist or provide student‑specific safety activities such as: escorting on and off bus, car seat/safety harness management, address elopement behaviors.

Other

• Maintain cleanliness of bus interior.
• Participate in cross training.
• Establish and maintain a good rapport with students, parents, school personnel and co‑workers.
• Attend in‑service training classes and safety meetings as required by the department.
• Learn assigned routes in order to assist a substitute driver.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
