Job summary

Perrysburg Exempted Village School District in Perrysburg, Ohio is seeking a part-time Bus Driver (8.01) to support both morning and afternoon routes. Reports to the Director of Transportation and ensures safe, efficient operation of school buses.

The role requires safety compliance, route maintenance and strong public relations with the school community. Position is part-time with a 4-hour daily schedule, both AM and PM shifts.

Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license with CDL endorsement and bus driver's certificate.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must meet Ohio DOE and district policy requirements.
  • Completion of satisfactory pre-employment driver training and basic bus driver's education.
  • Physical qualification as determined by annual physical examination.
  • Professional tact, diplomacy and presentation with administrators, staff, teachers, students and the community.
  • Conscientious and responsible for own work performance.
  • Good health, high moral character and good attendance.
  • Enthusiasm and a sincere desire to aid all students.

Responsibilities

  • Complete a safety check of the school bus as required by regulation before each run.
  • Board the bus 15 minutes before morning departure and 5 minutes before afternoon departure.
  • In cold weather, warm up engine gradually and ensure mirrors are clear.
  • Perform pre-trip inspection and check lights, tires, hazards and gauges.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to bus mechanics via system.
  • Maintain safe operating conditions and cleanliness of the bus.
  • Maintain pupil control and report violations to transportation supervisor.
  • Maintain routes, stops and time schedules; propose changes with approval.
  • Report hazardous conditions along routes to supervisor.
  • Follow approved procedures for bus accidents and complete forms.
  • Attend bus driver meetings and be available for emergency dismissal.
  • Notify supervisor of illness daily or ongoing illness to secure substitutes.
  • Promote good public relations by appearance and conduct.
  • Support school events and field trips as needed.
  • Conduct a minimum of three rear-door emergency evacuation drills per year.
  • Attend one annual inservice program.
  • Prepare routes, pupil lists and accident reports as required.
  • Brief passengers on safety protocol.
  • Do not leave loose items on the bus.

Job Description

Title: 8.01 Bus Driver

Reports To: Director of Transportation

Employment Status: Part time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

4 hours per day, AM shift and PM shift

Hourly Wage: $23.56 per hour

Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license with CDL endorsement; bus drivers' certificate.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must meet requirements of the Ohio Department of Education and the district's Board Policy.
  • Completion of satisfactory pre-employment driver's training program, and basic bus driver's education program.
  • Be physically qualified as determined by annual physical examination required by the State of Ohio.
  • Professional tact, diplomacy and presentation with administrators, staff, teachers, students, parents and the community.
  • Conscientious and assumes responsibility for own work performance.
  • Good health, high moral character and good attendance record.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm and a sincere desire to aid all students.
Essential Functions
  1. Complete a safety check of the school bus as required by the State of Ohio Regulation3301-83-11 before each run.
  2. Board the bus at least fifteen (15) minutes before the scheduled morning departure and at least five (5) minutes before departing the parking area in the afternoon.
  3. In cold weather, warm up the engine gradually. Do not race the engine. Be sure the windshield, side windows and all mirrors are clear.
  4. Complete established pre-trip inspection. Before starting on a scheduled bus route to pick up of discharge pupils, the driver shall check headlights, tail and stop lights, warning lights, directional lights, tires, horn, windshield wipers, heater and defroster, dashboard gauges, steering brakes or any other feature which may affect the safe, efficient operation of the vehicle.
  5. Report equipment malfunctions in schooldude and give to the bus mechanics.
  6. Responsible for safe operating conditions and cleanliness of the bus.
  7. Maintain pupil control and report any violation to the transportation supervisor according to procedure.
  8. Maintain routes, stops and time schedules as established by the supervisor. Make suggestions for more efficient routing but permission must be granted by the transportation supervisor prior to any change.
  9. Report any hazardous conditions along the existing route to the transportation supervisor.
  10. Follow properly approved procedures for reporting bus accidents and complete forms provided.
  11. Will be present or available at all bus driver meetings and in the event of emergency dismissal.
  12. Notify the transportation supervisor or designee in the case of illness daily or of continued illness so as to permit time to secure a substitute driver and complete in Frontline/AESOP.
  13. Promote good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, conversation and the appearance of the school bus.
  14. Share in the responsibility for driving for a school-sponsored event and/or approved field trip.
  15. Shall conduct a minimum of three (3) rear door emergency evacuation drills on each school bus run each year.
  16. Shall be required to attend one (1) annual inservice program.
  17. Prepare reports, route maps, schedules, pupil lists and accident reports as required by the State of Ohio, Ohio Department of Education and the Board of Education.
  18. Brief passengers on safety protocol.
  19. Do not leave any loose items on the bus.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
  • Help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
  • Conduct other duties related to the bus driver's duties as assigned by the transportation supervisor.
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
  • Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions.
  • Occasional interaction among unruly children.
