Position Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation, to ensure the safe transportation of students, staff, and others to and from school, residential neighborhoods, and field trips.

Essential Job Functions
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Observe all mandatory safety regulations.
  • Maintain student discipline on bus and follow behavior management guidelines adopted by the Transportation Department.
  • Report undisciplined/unruly students to the proper authority.
  • Keep assigned bus clean.
  • Efficiently follow the assigned schedule.
  • Inspect bus before each operation for mechanical defects and safety concerns.
  • In case of mechanical failure or tardiness, notify the proper authority of issue(s) in a timely manner.
  • Pick up and discharge students only at authorized stops.
  • Exercise responsible leadership while performing school trips.
  • Transport only authorized students.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports.
  • Abide by township policies to include guidelines listed in the Transportation Center Policy/Procedures Manual.
  • Report all infractions to the Director of Transportation.

Travels to and from school district buildings, to vehicle service stations, field trip locations and other destinations are required.

Pay Rate

$25.23 per hour

Work Schedule

Full Time – 30-40 hours per week – 182 days.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of all traffic laws, regulations, road signs and related information.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre‑trip inspections, and clean the bus.
  • Visual and auditory acuity within professionally determined normal ranges, with correction if needed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective organizational, problem solving, and time‑management skills.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend information from procedures manuals and other materials.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow traffic signs required.
  • Ability to physically move through the bus.
  • Ability to maintain composure and perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to comply with Federal and State DOT guidelines relating to school bus driving.
  • Ability to maintain a clean driving record.
  • Ability to read and write.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Physical Requirements – Ability to sit for extended periods of time (Very Frequent). Ability to see for reading laws and codes, rules and policies and printed matter (Very Frequent). Ability to communicate clearly (Very Frequent). Ability to lift or carry 25 pounds (Occasional). Ability to push/pull up to 75 pounds (Occasional). Ability to reach in all directions (Seldom). Note: Seldom = <25% Occasional = 26–50% Oftentimes = 51–75% Very Frequent = >75%.

License / Registration / Certification
  • Valid Indiana State CDL Class B license with a P and S endorsement.
